1.What is your name and what band do you play for?
Kevin Bindschatel, and I am the drummer for Torn Away.
2.Who made you want to play drums and why?
Alex Van Halen, man.. Hot For Teacher.. What more do you need? Nah, I mean.. my biggest influences are Alex.. Lars.. Nick Menza.. I was big into those three groups.
3.When did you get your first kit? Tell us about it…
My god, I still own my first drumkit. I got in '94 I think, cuz I always played the school's drumset and I was in the army before that and I didn't get into playing in bands until I got out of the army. It's a 1974 Ludwig drumset, it's a six piece. It was white with Zildjian cymbals, I had to have it white with the black heads on it so it looks like Lars' drumset.
4.Were your parents supportive of you and your loud / expensive new habit?
Hugely. My mom was happy that I just stopped beating on all of her Tupperware dishes.
5.What drum performance on an album is perfection to you?
I would have to say Metallica "...And Justice For All" because I think I learned more songs from that album than any other. That album had killer sound too. I think that's the best sounding Metallica album.
6.Tell us about your current kit and set up in DETAIL.
OCDP drums, snares are both DW and all my hardware is DW. Meinl cymbals. I play Vater sticks and Remo heads.
7.If you could have a dream kit tell us about it in DETAIL
DW Collector's series kit. I know I would want a brass snare, Meinl cymbals, and DW hardware. They make the best hardware out of anybody. I think DW has the best all around equipment, period, for drummers... The sound, the quality of the build.. Everything about them. Just a top notch drum company.
8.Name your top 5 drummers excluding Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy
As of today my top five drummers I would have to say Jay Weinberg, of course. Morgan Rose is my all time favorite... Thomas Lang, he's an independant drummer, he's badass.. Benny Greb, he's awesome. I'm gonna go old school on everybody real quick and go with Buddy Rich. If it wasn't for Buddy Rich, there wouldn't be a lot of those drummers out there.
9. Do you prefer Live or Studio?
Of course live... You get the energy coming back to you from the audience and it just eggs you on.
10.Do drummers really get all the chicks and if so how do we convince the guitarist?
Hell yeah we do! We don't really need to convince the guitar players about that... They are too busy stroking their own egos. Girls like drummers because we know how to bang.
