HER DESPAIR INTERVIEW

Interview with J (vocals) from HER DESPAIR

Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

HER DESPAIR began in 2015 as a solo studio project, releasing the debut album “Hymns For the Hopeless.” Now we have evolved into a full live band, and are drawing ever closer to the release of our brand new EP “Mournography” on the 20th July. It’s a very exciting and busy time for us.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

There were several other contenders as a name originally, but as soon as “Her Despair” came into my head, the deed was done. In two simple words it sums up the essence of what this music is. The final song on the new EP “In the Arms of a Sadist” actually references one or two of the original band names within the lyrics.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

We’re based in Reading UK, where there’s a pretty good local scene. It’s mainly metal so we don’t always fit in due to our more sombre predilections, but we take that as a positive sign we’re doing things a bit differently. We’ve made some friends along the way, and it’s always good to see familiar faces at the shows.

4. How would you describe your style?

A maelstrom of tragic romance, with moments of theological reflection.

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

The aforementioned album was released in 2015, and “Mournography” is coming on the 20th July. We could not be happier with it, and we really feel it’s a step up from the first release. The songs are better, the production is better, the artwork is better, and we can’t wait to share it with you.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

We’re already fairly deep into the writing process for the follow-up to “Mournography,” but more on that another day. We don’t want to spoil all the surprises.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We’re playing an EP release show at the Reading Facebar on 20th July, which will be our first show in awhile whilst the stars were aligning. We have a few more dates booked, all of which you’ll be able to find on our social media accounts. We’re always open to opportunities, so please get in touch if you’re a promoter or band interested in working with us.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

More live shows, more music, more merchandise, more smoke. The best way to stay up to date is to check out our online profiles. They’re all run by the band members, so you’re getting first-hand and exclusive information and posts.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

www.herdespair.bandcamp.com for downloads, or Spotify, iTunes and YouTube. An even better option would be to come and see us perform a live seance, and buy a physical CD and some merchandise there.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

In the Sisters of Mercy we trust.
