All about the mighty Space Cushion!
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
After being out of the music scene for years, Scotty MC (lead vocals/songwriter) decided to embark on a new part-time project where he would be the lead vocalist and bassist and began recruiting some new members to forma a hard rock power trio. Barry Welch, a former bandmate from the BAG years, jumped in on drums. A few weeks later, another former bandmate from the ODDJOB years, Bill Corley, came on board to fulfill the guitar duties after recently moving back to Austin. Barry had to exit due to other commitments and eventually Bret Bryon, who had played with Scotty and Bill before, climbed aboard to sit on the throne! In 2018, Kyle Bassett joined the group to take over on bass.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
A space cushion is a buffer around your vehicle that you maintain to allow room to maneuver, if necessary. Since Scotty is very fond of cars, especially sports cars, he decided to use the term as it also matches his initials, SC.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
Austin, Texas - the scene is all over the map because there are so many great musicians here of all genres and styles. Where to begin? Freebleeder, Three33, Wild Tinderbox, Darkness; Ending, Chasing After Alice, Blacktop Syndicate, and Dongle, just to name a few.
4. How would you describe your style?
Hard rock with dashes of punk, metal, and pop. Someone once described us a "Kiss meets Sex Pistols"
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Just a three-song EP and a couple of other demo tunes available on Reverb Nation. While most rock songs are like a well-crafted beer
or wine, Space Cushion's are like shots of whiskey: simple yet hard-edged; they go down fast and hit ya in the gut. Hours later, you're still reeling from the effects.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
We have a full-length CD we're in the process of recording and mixing and we're hoping for a late summer release.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We're all older guys with families and full-time jobs so no plans to tour. We may venture out of town here and there in the future but no plans right now. We have a local TV appearance planned for JUly 15 and a show booked at Texas Mist on September 8. August will be our month for completing the record.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
To keep rockin and have a great time doing it!
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?
www.reverbnation.com/spacecushion
www.facebook.com/spacecushion
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
That this is a band that works hard and plays hard and approaches songwriting on a personal level that we hope people can relate to. Our goal is to have you banging your head and shaking your ass!
Thanks!!
Scotty MC
