1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.
Disconnected Genius rose from the ashes of a band called Piracy. The first incarnation of Disconnected Genius started in 2012. Now in our mid-20’s we’d stretched the boundaries with reckless abandon and were refining our craft as professional musicians. We were lucky enough to play a few festivals and all of a sudden we recorded our first studio album, Dogs Chasing Fairy Tales. For the first time radio stations were picking up our stuff and then we recorded our 2nd studio LP, Nirvikalpa Meow which has been garnering even more radio.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?
I mentioned Piracy in the first question, before making it to a proper studio we recorded around 6 punk ethic styled DIY LP’s and for our last album out of frustration we decided to record a purposefully bad album, which was called Disconnected Genius. So that’s where the name comes from, but to me it means without ego. In order to tap into genius you have to get out of your own way so to speak.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?
We are based out of Melbourne, Australia. It’s a pretty healthy scene, some cool bands I like are Zodiac Smith, Crude Oil, Trampolene and The Mind Flowers.
4. How would you describe your style?
It’s a fairly large style arc, from punk rock to alternative rock to melancholic piano type ballads, so it’s very eclectic. It’s something I describe as hypnotic rock.
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?
Currently we have released 2 LP’s, Dogs Chasing Fairy Tales & Nirvikalpa Meow. Dogs Chasing Fairy Tales is a concept album which chronicles the journey from nihilism to enlightenment, so it’s a definitely a trip. Nirvikalpa Meow is without a concept except for being an epitaph to my cat Meow, it’s probably lyrically deeper and some songs are about specific things, such as Vertruvian Men being about a documentary called All This Mayhem about Tas & Ben Pappas and The Little Don being a tribute to the late Australian cricketer, Phil Hughes.
6. Do you have any new music in the works?
Yes, we are currently working on our 3rd LP and are feeling really good about the songs.
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?
We are taking a break from touring to focus on our 3rd album at the moment.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Other than record our 3rd album and do the best we can for the songs, not too sure to be honest, trying to not think too far ahead of things but we feel we are really onto something and it is like our calling in life.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?
Ideally I’d like them to be able to find a song they can turn to and lean on for support and inspiration for the rest of their lives.
