DOAN INTERVIEW APRIL 25TH 2018
1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members. DOAN is a progressive alternative metal band from Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Formed of Diane Thibault at vocals, Olivier Roy on the drums, André Labrecque on bass and Nicholas Roy on guitar, they first established in 2011 as a cover band in the hard rock, alternative metal and post grunge musical styles, they interpret songs of various bands from Alice in chains to Creed with the likes of Royal Blood, Alter bridge, Rage against the machine, Godsmack and many others. Bearing the name Ghettoblaster at first, they changed their name for DOAN in 2017 to dedicate themselves more seriously to their own compositions. All this change started back in 2014 when guitarist Nicholas presented a song to the other band member's. It became the song titled "Madness or reason". From there they began to write songs together until they decided it was time to make an album. With their first album "Stupidity Kills", they are ready to rock the stage and look forward to making you listen to their music Diane Thibault: Singer, author and musician (guitar). She has always been passionate of music and open to any musical styles. She has been practicing her passion for more than 20 years doing some shows with various musicians in various styles. Now as the lead singer for the band DOAN, her main goals are to create and have fun while doing all this very seriously. Nicholas Roy: Guitarist, back vocal and composer. Growing up in an environment where the music was always very present without being surrounded by musicians. At 16 years old, he began to play electric guitar aiming at following the tracks of his idols James Hetfield from Metallica and Scott Ian from Anthrax. He has been a member of various cover bands as well as one of the founder of the Montreal hardcore band Xplicit Noize with whom he recorded 4 albums and made hundreds of shows in Canada and Europe. Now guitarist for DOAN, he’s totally devoted to it. Andre Labrecque: Bassist, back vocal, author and composer. He has been practicing his passion for more than 35 years. Approximately one decade of learning with different garage band and then another decade with more serious bands. For more than 5 years, he did a whole lot of bar gigs. Now bass player for DOAN with the first album, he can’t wait to make it back on stage. Olivier Roy: Drummer, very open to various musical styles but more into the metal and hard rock. He bought his first drum kit when he was 15 years old and since then he did several shows with different cover bands. Roadie for the band Xplicit Noize for a few years, he participated to the two European tours they did back then. Now drummer for the group, he dedicates itself totally to DOAN.
2. What’s the origin of the band’s name? DOAN is simply the first letter of each name of the band members.
3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend? We’re in Montreal, Canada. The music scene is not easy for a new band like us, we have to work real hard to get trough. There’s lots of bands in montreal and as i’ll make contacts, i’ll let them know about you and what you’re doing!
4. How would you describe your style? Alternative metal is, we think, the best categorie that sums up the style of music we’re doing. It’s a melting pot of our influences that goes from Progressive rock to metal while going trough grunge and hard rock
5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works? We’ve just release our first album titled Stupidity Kills. We’re hard working passionate people that are doing music seriously. We do things in a professionnal way, everything have to be as on point as possible but our number one rule is: we must have fun doing it!
6. Do you have any new music in the works? Yes, we’re always working on new music!
7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out? Right now, this is our priority. We have 3 gigs in may, 17th in Montreal, 19th in Ottawa and 26th in Lévis. We’re actively looking to book more gigs and there’s a small France tour into talk.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band? Making sure to be heard and seen the most possible and keeping new songs coming.
9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff? Our album is available on every digital platform and on our web site, the download is free. On the merch side, we have toques, cd’s and t-shirts are coming in a couple of days. A merch store in gonna be soon up and running on our site. For now, the only way to get merch is to come see us live!
10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time? We want them to remember the emotions it brings to them, that what music is all about isn’t it?
