THE VAST ODDITY......NO REALLY ITS ODD...... THE GRINDER INTERVIEW

1.Thanks for your time. Tell us about your band and what you do for your band.
Cayla : We're a trippy, experimental indie band with elements of surf-rock and other styles. We love to experiment and not set limitations on what sounds and styles we can create. I write and compose songs, sing, and play guitar.
Chad : Exactly. We both have equal creative control in the band which makes a perfect fusion of both our personal styles. I write and compose songs, sing, play guitar and make use of a loop pedal and stomp-box.

2.When did you decide you wanted to be in a band?
Cayla : I always wanted to start a band but never really came across the right people until Chad came along.
Chad : Ooh Cayla's answer is perfect. I second that.

3. What is different about being a musician than you imagined?
Chad : It is exactly as I imagined:-)
Cayla : I personally thought I'd get nervous a lot more being on stage, but I really don't get nervous at all. It's exciting and kind of instinctual. I also never expected so many people in the industry to be as supportive as they are.

4.What gear do you use and why?
Chad : I use a Fender Squire or Ibanez acoustic guitar, they are small bodied which is perfect because I incorporate Percussion on the guitar too. I use a Boss loop pedal because it's built like a tank lol.
Cayla : I use Ibanez electric guitars because I love the sound of them, the quality, the way they look, just everything. I also use a Zoom guitar pedal because it has around 40 effects and it's so much better than having 40 different pedals to get those effects haha.

5. What music do you listen to that would surprise people?
Cayla : Probably EDM because most people that play instruments seem to hate it. But I still love my electronic music as much as any other genre.
Chad : I'm pretty open about my taste in music, even the 'embarrassing' kinds lol.

6. How do we find your music and merch to buy?
Four of our songs are online (Beautifully High, Can't Surf, Swell, Squares are People Too), you can find them on almost any music site (iTunes, Spotify, Deezer and many more). Our CD's and T-shirts are at The Merch Church at Railways Cafe in Centurion, otherwise we do take orders on our Facebook page.

7. How did you get a record deal? Or do you want a record deal or are you DIY?
We're doing it ourselves, but hey, if a good record deal came our way..... haha

8. What bands do people compare your music to?
Nick Cave, Mazzy Starr, Nirvana, Ringo Deathstarr

9. Are you pro Spotify / streaming services ? Or do you think it hurts sales?
So far, we're pro Spotify/streaming services. We're happy people all over the world are listening to our music.

10. What’s the ultimate goal for the band?
Chad : To continue writing honest songs that resonate, touring far and wide and enjoying every minute of it.
Cayla : To have our music heard by all the people that are on the same frequency as us, to tour the world with it, and continue this amazing journey of spreading art, meeting familiar spirits and experiencing the beauty of this life.

11. Will we see you tour?
Indeed. We have done a couple tours in KZN, and will be touring the Garden route and Sunshine Coast in October.

12. Who would you love to tour with?
Chad : Eddie Vedder
Cayla : Who ever's paying. HAHA

13.What is your favorite song of yours and why?
Chad : Each song has a different vibe, so it's difficult to choose just one because together they're a journey.
Cayla : Hmmm... Which finger would I chop off?

14. Why should people take the time to listen to your band over the thousands of other bands?
There really is no music like ours out there. We're still struggling to even describe our genre. It makes you feel free and outta this world.

15.What are your favorite music websites labels podcast etc?
iTunes and Spotify

16. Is imagery important to you? Do you judge albums by the cover?
Yes definitely. It is very important as it is part of the artistry and what it will make you feel or think. A picture can help deliver the message you're trying to convey.

17.If you could choose a cover song your band mates would hate what would it be?
Cayla : For Chad it's"Sound of Silence" LOL
Chad : For Cayla It's "Mustang Sally" haha

18.Is the record or live show more important?
They work hand in hand. Your record is your product, your live shows are your marketing of your product. Both are just as crucial.

 19. Name 3 people dead or alive you would want to play your music for.
Chad : David Bowie, Barney the Dinosaur and Harry Potter
Cayla : John Lennon, my dad and any director of any surfing film to come!

20. Lemmy Ozzy Dio and Rob Halford in a cage match who wins?
   Chad: Ozzy!
Cayla: Dio! He magically spoke through a poster in Tenacious D, he'd kick ass!
