Time to Kill sits down with the grinder

1.Thanks for your time. Tell us about your band and what you do for your band.

Time to Kill formed in 2006 when myself(Keith Monville , guitar and manager) and original drummer, Paul Huser, had some time to kill so we started jamming in the basement.   Soon we decided to add the rest of the pieces of the original line up and started working on new music.   2007 we started doing some local shows and a regional record label Turkey Vulture Records noticed us and we hooked up for our debut CD "Insanity".  After a lot of shows and touring a couple band members moved on to family life.  We got replacement band members and kept going.   After another year band members moved on and had to be replaced.  Finally in 2012 we got a set line up again and released the "Ashes to Ashes" CD through 101 Distribution in 2013.   We played all over the Midwest USA in support of that release and then started working on new songs again.   Once again a couple band members had to move on but we soon got them replaced and finished with the new music.   The band is currently doing scattered shows while in the studio recording the CD "S.B.A.H." which will be the 10 year anniversary of the band.  (SBAH= Slut Bag Ass Hammer).   SBAH comes from a band night out at the taverns and we got a 10 dollar bill for  change at a tavern that had those words written on it.   We decided that would be the name of the new CD.
Through the years we also had some booking issues with the band name Time to Kill so we also go by the initials TTK.  We also had an issue with our music because we were to punk for metal heads and too metal for punk rockers so call our music "metal thrash-n-punk".  We have an original sound and our music bounces from music styles and changes up lyrics that are about horror, death, beer, bacon, pac man, x-girlfriends, ect.

2.When did you decide you wanted to be in a band?

I got in the band idea at a young age because i liked music a lot and then my parents bought me a guitar and signed me up for lessons.   Around 1988 I joined my first band, The Freeway Killers, a local punk band joining the crossover scene.

3. What is different about being a musician than you imagined?
its expensive. Then you need to decide if the band thing is your hobby or career.  It cant be your career unless you tour.

4.What gear do you use and why?

Currently I use Peavy amps and BC Rich guitars.   I tried out lots of amps and every metal guitarists around me had marshall so i wanted something else and ended up with Peavy.   Bc Rich has the cool body shapes and good metal sound.

5. What music do you listen to that would surprise people?

Devo, James Brown,Busta Rhymes, Everclear .

6. How do we find your music and merch to buy?

We put links to our music and merch on the website http://www.timetokill.us   We have music available on most digital download websites.

7. How did you get a record deal? Or do you want a record deal or are you DIY?

Our first record deal was with Turkey Vulture Records out of WI/IL area.  They were looking for new bands and I had worked with the owner of the label before.   The 2nd release we just went with a distribution company.   For the new release we are looking for a record deal or distribution.

8. What bands do people compare your music to?

We have a messed up sound since we bounce around in styles.   I have heard Social Distortion meets Slayer, Rancid meets Anthrax, Megadeth meets the Misfits.

9. Are you pro Spotify / streaming services ? Or do you think it hurts sales

We do the streaming to get our name and music out there.  It hurts sales but its a form of advertising and promotion.

10. What’s the ultimate goal for the band?

Finish the CD, get a record or distro deal, tour for a while.

11. Will we see you tour?

After the CD is done we will do some small tours.

12. Who would you love to tour with?

The Misfits, Doyle,Danzig, Suicidal Tendencies, Anthrax, GWAR, Municipal Waste, Jungle Rot, Wrath, DRI, Green Jelly, Morbid Saint...

13.What is your favorite song of yours and why?

We have a new song called WTF.  We wrote it in the studio and it rips.  Its all about shit that makes you say what the fuck?

14. Why should people take the time to listen to your band over the thousands of other bands

The original sound and blend that makes us metal thrash-n-punk.

15.What are your favorite music websites labels podcast etc?

That list is huge.  Too many to list and the list changes.

16. Is imagery important to you? Do you judge albums by the cover?

The album cover has to get your attention in a good way.   Our band image...?  We are just t-shirt and jeans.

17.If you could choose a cover song your band mates would hate what would it be?

We all have those songs or bands we dont like...I really dont have a cover that all the other band members would hate.  maybe on of them would hate it.   But Busta Rhymes would be a no go.

18.Is the record or live show more important?

The record is important because it shows you are doing something and have something new or current out there to listen to.  The live show influences people to buy your record so i guess in the end its the live show.

19. Name 3 people dead or alive you would want to play your music for.

  Lemmy, Dave Lombardo, Mike Muir
