Traveler Interview

1.What is the name of your band and how did you come up with it?
What is your name and what do you do for the band?

Traveler! Originally, I wanted to name the band Starbreaker, after
the title track. But legal issues with Mr. Tony Harnell forced us to
change our name haha. so keeping with the theme of the lyrics, Traveler
was born!My name is Matt Ries. And for the time being, I write all the music

2.Tell us where you are based and describe the scene. How do you think where you are located influences your sound.

Based mostly out of Calgary Canada. But the band is split between
3 cities. Including Portland, and Edmonton.
I think the only thing inspirational about where I live, is the fact
we are very limited with our surroundings. You have to drive for a very
long time before you reach another major city. So the inspiration is
to make our mark without the need for moving to a more convenient city,
I suppose.

3.Who influences your sound that would surprise people?

I think Thin Lizzy and Vio-lence might come to a surprise. I have a
massive amount of love for those bands. So I'm sure there's hints of
that in our sound one way or another. Either way. Those bands kill.

4.Are you endorsed by musical companies , if so who , and if not who would you like to be endorsed by?

No endorsements so far. I believe Chad Vallier (drums) is endorsed by
Soultone Cymbals. I'd love to be endorsed by Jackson or Kramer. Those
are my go-to axes. But honestly, any endorsement would be an honor!

5.When you started what was your ultimate goal? And how close to the goal are you now?

The goal was just to release the demo and see if people like it. More
so a shot in the dark. And just releasing something on my own for my own
satisfaction. I'm so fortunate to have so much support in all of this.
It lit a fire under my ass. Within the last year the goals have grown
bigger and bigger. There's no end at this point!

6.In today's digital environment it takes creative strategy to keep things moving. What creative ideas do you have to keep your band relevant over time?

I think if you're trying too hard, it's going to come across that way.
So the strategy for myself is to write what I would want to hear. Thinking
about what's "hip" and popular at the time is an awful approach. I think
good song writing will keep a band relevant. Regardless of what's cool
at the time.

7.We've all seen a terrible live band that is awesome on CD. Is that cool with you or do you lose respect for bands that cannot pull it off live?

If a band can't deliver the goods live, then they should keep it
digital haha. Watching a great band on tape fail to perform is definitely
dissapointing. I always hope they will get better maybe the next time I
see them. Please dont play live if you cant play haha.

8.Tell us your “core” are you Metal , Rock , Punk , Pop etc because people just have to categorize these days you know?

I'd rather not over complicate things with a list of sub-genres. To
keep it simple. We are heavy metal. The listeners can categorize us to
whatever they see fit!

I would'nt have formed this band without amazing talent. Everyone in
the band pulls their weight. I hope this doesn't sound egotistical. But
I think we have a really strong line up. With our style, I believe we
need everyone to be on their A game. It would feel extremely
disenguine if I felt we didn't deserve the recognition.

9.This is a tough question but a very real reality, Is your band actually talented or just popular?
Many bands make it with a cliche or publicity stunts etc. Would you accept fame even if it was just because of being the “ in” thing or is it actually important to you that you gain favor with talent?

10.Tell us what to expect from you live. Nothing is more boring than watching bands stare at the floor and bob their heads to music nobody but the band knows. What can your band offer in a live setting that people will remember?

At the moment, we only have 2 live performances under our belt.
Which was a great ice breaker for us. Now that we dusted that off. We're
confident in putting on an amazing show. With a solid performance and
tons of energy. There's very few bands that are good enough to just stand
in one place!

11. What releases have you put out , When will we see something new?

We released our demo last year. An exclusive track for the Trapped
Under Ice compilation is out in a few days. And our full length is out
February 22nd! The ball is rolling smoothly.

12. If you have videos where can we see them?

We just started working on our YouTube channel. We'll be uploaded
content on their regularily. Channel is under the name Traveler Metal.
We will also share all this over Facebook and other platforms. So keep
your eyes locked on those!

13.Everybody has Bandcamp , ReverbNation , Soundcloud , etc
Why do you think this is so important? Doesn't it seem like everyone is giving everything out for free?

Those sites give you an option to sell your music. There's nothing
wrong with giving out your art for free. But music isn't cheap. So the
sales help us a lot with being able to afford the things we want to
accomplish. If people steal our music and share it with the world. I'm
all for that too!

14.Best moment of your career so far?

I think the feeling of getting everyone in the same room to jam our
songs for the first time was an amazing feeling. I had no idea it would
sound so good right out of the gate. We have a lot of plans for the future.
So we've barely scratched the surface of what's to come.

With our new album on the way. Our shows set up for Keep It True,
Legions Of Metal, and our album release shows here in Canada. You can
bet this is just the beginning. We have no signs of slowing down. And a
ton of amazing plans for the future. Thank you everyone for all your
support! We fucking love you. FEEL THE REIGN OF STARBREAKER!!!

15.Your message to the fans?

Bonus Question who do you bring back

Dime , Cliff , Dio , Lemmy , Randy

Massive amount of respect for all those musicians. But I would
have to choose Randy. Would've loved to see what he could've created
given the chance. RAISE YOUR GLASS TO THE FALLEN HEROES.
