SIN MG THE GRINDER INTERVIEW

1.What is the name of your band and how did you come up with it? Sin MG – Our name was originally Sin the Moon God back in the early 2000’s. We shortened it to Sin MG when we got the project back together after a several year hiatus. Sin the Moog God was an ancient Sumerian god and a play off of my last name, Sinclair.

What is your name and what do you do for the band? Scott Sinclair I am the lead singer, rhythm guitar player and co-writer of our music.


2.Tell us where you are based and describe the scene. How do you think where you are located influences your sound. 
We are based out of the Southside of Chicago, where people are very real and passionate. You always no where you stand. Our music definitely takes on these characteristics. The sounds is driving, groove oriented and passionate. Our Lyrics are all meaningful and usually inspired by current events.


3.Who influences your sound that would surprise people? This artist doesn’t influence our sound, but as a musician there are aspects Bon Jovi’s formula that have unconsciously seeped into ours. We also have some hip hop influences on top of some of the usual suspects.
  

4.Are you endorsed by musical companies , if so who , and if not who would you like to be endorsed by? We are endorsed by Nacimiento Tequila. We would love to be endorsed by Shure, ESP, Ernie Ball, DW, Fractal, Line 6 and Remo.


5.When you started what was your ultimate goal? And how close to the goal are you now? To make a good living in the music industry. We have a lot of work to do, but a path forward is clearer now. During our career the industry has completely changed. It has taken a while to redirect our efforts and come to grips with many long-standing norms that don’t exist any longer.


 

6.In today's digital environment it takes creative strategy to keep things moving. What creative ideas do you have to keep your band relevant over time? One of our creative ideas is to reach more people by doing more Facebook live (YouTube & Instagram) concert events at our rehearsal space. We have a multi-camera setup with studio quality sounds piping through to our live platforms. The benefit is that we can play for more people in a shorter, more frequent format, while being efficient with our time and generating tons of content.


7.We've all seen a terrible live band that is awesome on CD. Is that cool with you or do you lose respect for bands that cannot pull it off live? Lose ALL respect!


8.Tell us your “core” are you Metal , Rock , Punk , Pop etc because people just have to categorize these days you know? We are an Alternative Metal type of band. Heavy grooving guitars, over-played drums, meaningful lyrics and mostly clean vocals.


9.This is a tough question but a very real reality, Is your band actually talented or just popular? We are on the talented end of the spectrum, although we aren’t stacked with virtuosos. Our live performance is well rehearsed. We believe in delivering a great show, both visually and audibly.

Many bands make it with a cliche or publicity stunts etc. Would you accept fame even if it was just because of being the “ in” thing or is it actually important to you that you gain favor with talent? I want people to get something from the experience of listening to our music and watching our live shows. I want to give them chills! That doesn’t take musician talent to pull that off. It’s more about the song and the performance. Again, while we are talented, we are focused on our audience and not showing off with some ridiculous solo that 90% of the audience doesn’t understand. We are songwriters first.


  

10.Tell us what to expect from you live. Nothing is more boring than watching bands stare at the floor and bob their heads to music nobody but the band knows. What can your band offer in a live setting that people will remember? We make many attempts to teach our audience how to interact with our show. Audience participation is an ongoing goal as we try to elevate our career. We also deploy vertical smoke visuals, 808’s and backing tracks that are perfectly sync’d with our set. We script our show and try to keep things moving. We try very hard to make tuning and guitar changes silent and seamless.




11. What releases have you put out , When will we see something new? We have released two albums, Deception & Fear. We are working on our third album now. The material has all been written (demo’s available). We are now looking for a good studio to capture it the right way.

Why do you think this is so important? Doesn't it seem like everyone is giving everything out for free? It’s good to be everywhere because all potential audiences have their preferred platform and it’s up to us to find them, not the other way around. Everyone IS giving everything away these days. Licensing, Merch and VIP packages are the current way to make money in music as a performer.




14.Best moment of your career so far? 

It will happen on August 27th this month. We are supporting the band Red at a great local venue called The Forge. Red is one of my favorite bands. It will be cool to share the stage with them.


  

15.Your message to the fans? The amount of work and money that goes into operating a band these days is tremendous. When you run across an unsigned band that moves you, support them by buying a t-shirt, following them on social and/or telling a friend. Don’t let all the noise out there scare you away from discovering and supporting new music. A lot of bands are working very hard against all odds. Positive feedback is an amazing gift for people who are making major sacrifices to turn silence into sound.
