Grinder Interview - Northern Fallout

1.What is the name of your band and how did you come up with it? What is your name and what do you do for the band?

Our band is called Northern Fallout. Our original name was Perpetua, however we discovered there is a band in Scotland with the same name so we decided to change ours to avoid any future confusion. The 6 of us took a hand full of names we came up with and put on a white board everyone took turns scratching off the names we didnt like and Northern Fallout was the last one standing lol

My name is Chris Hunter, Im one of the 3 guitarists in the band and acting manager.

2.Tell us where you are based and describe the scene. How do you think where you are located influences your sound.

We are based out of Moose Jaw Saskatchewan Canada. The scene here is an odd one. Moose Jaw is Packed full of very talented musicians but little to no venues to perform which forces bands to put on their own shows or run to the larger cities (Regina,Saskatoon) Im not sure the area itself influences our sound but deffinatly helps keep the drive alive. Keeps us hungry to get out there and do more.

3.Who influences your sound that would surprise people?

We have MANY diferent influences lol, Between the 6 of us we almost cover every sub genre of the metal world as far as personal tastes. Thats the fun part of writing is how we can somehow work all those influences into a song fluidly, A few of us have a big blues influence in our playing, not sure thats suprising but a bit different in my mind to meld that into the work as well. We all genuinly love heavy music and thats what makes us work well together.

4.Are you endorsed by musical companies , if so who , and if not who would you like to be endorsed by?

No endorsements at the moment and im sure anyone of us would be happy with anyone who came along at this point lol

5.When you started what was your ultimate goal? And how close to the goal are you now?

Our main goal was to make original heavy music with accessible lyrics and make it unique to us. Other than eventually playing live shows we didnt really have any huge goals to conquer. Everything we’ve done up to now has been above and beyond what we really expected to happen so we are constantly humbled and looking forward to see what we can accomplish next.

6.In today's digital environment it takes creative strategy to keep things moving. What creative ideas do you have to keep your band relevant over time?

Todays music industry is a scary one, I wouldnt say we have some over the top strategy or gimic to stay relevant, We just want to keep writing and playing and hopefully other people will enjoy it as much as we do. Constantly working and fine tuning our sound to be the best we can is the ultimate strategy id think.

7.We've all seen a terrible live band that is awesome on CD. Is that cool with you or do you lose respect for bands that cannot pull it off live?

I’ve seen that happen alot. I personally feel your live show should sound better than your produced work but thats just me. One main reason we stuck with 3 guitar players was to be able to do everything live rather than rely on backing tracks and whatnot.

8.Tell us your “core” are you Metal , Rock , Punk , Pop etc because people just have to categorize these days you know?

Ya the sub-genres are a bit ridiculous now a days. Ive completely lost track haha. If i had to pick one I would just say metal. Like i said earlier, we try to include alot of different influences and styles in our music so its super hard to pin it down to one “type” of metal. Theres alot in there. I think its always up to the listener to catagorize what they are listening to wherever they seem it fits.

9.This is a tough question but a very real reality, Is your band actually talented or just popular? Many bands make it with a cliche or publicity stunts etc. Would you accept fame even if it was just because of being the “ in” thing or is it actually important to you that you gain favor with talent?

I would say our band is deffinatly talented, do we have room to improve?? OF COURSE lol i dont think theres a musician out there that would eventyually think they are “good enough now” As far as gimics go I really dont see that being an option for us. Im not sure about accepting fame for something other than the talent, i think it would eventually show and youd become yesterdays news real fast.

10.Tell us what to expect from you live. Nothing is more boring than watching bands stare at the floor and bob their heads to music nobody but the band knows. What can your band offer in a live setting that people will remember?

We have a very loud “wall of sound” aspect in our shows. Aggressive and fast. I agree on the “looking at the floor”part when we started thats exactly all we could physically do lol However over time the practice and experience starts to show in the performance. People can 100% expect a loud exciting and FUN time when they come to a Northern Fallout show.

11. What releases have you put out , When will we see something new?

We just released our first full length album March 30th. We are going to try and build some momentum off of that and hopefully get out and play some shows! We have started wring some new stuff however its far too soon to speculate when the next release will come. Who knows tho, a single could show up anytime!

12. If you have videos where can we see them?

Videos are super expensive!! lol and again in the area we live theres really nowhere to that offers that service, we are looking into it as we speak though. We did a lyric video for our track “Self Destruct” and you can find that on youtube or our Reverbnation page

13.Everybody has Bandcamp , ReverbNation , Soundcloud , etc

Why do you think this is so important? Doesn't it seem like everyone is giving everything out for free?

Ya i think those outlets are ideal for the unknown artist as its an easy way to get your stuff out there. Unfortunately we dont live in the old days where you mailed cassettes to record labels and hope to get picked up. Now you just whore yourself out on the internet and hope someone who’s something somewhere hears it lol

14.Best moment of your career so far?

We’ve had some pretty cool opportunities over the last few years, I would have to say opening for Act of Defiance and Meeting Chris Broderick was my favorite so far. Opening for Kataklysm is a very close 2nd!!

15.Your message to the fans?

Ummm just thanks for digging our music and continuing to support our band. You literally cant do shit as a musician without fans so we owe them everything and hopefully can continue to pump out more music that they can bang their heads to!

Bonus Question who do you bring back

Dime , Cliff , Dio , Lemmy , Randy

ALL OF EM!!!! theres no way i could decide on just one of them on the spot, or possibly ever haha too much respect and influence from each!

Thanks a bunch for the opportunity!
