THE METAL TIMES VOKILLS INTERVIEW : Denny Anthony / VERITAS

1.Please introduce yourself and tell us who you sing for

I’m Denny Anthony, lead Vocalist of Veritas and Signs Of Reign

2.What / Who made you want to sing?

When I was in middle school, my P.E. Coach, Mr. Hannah, heard me yellng in the locker room and he approached me, making me promise to join the Mt. Whitney High Scool Choir. What can I say? I kept my promise and shortly thereafter (at age 13) I joined a band and we played garage parties doing Metallica covers around town.

3.Who was the first singer you saw live that gave you chills?

Ray Alder of Fates Warning. That dude can make hairs stand up all over your body by just standing there and singing.

4.Many people say heavy music is just screaming, How would you combat that statement?

I’d say, listen to the context (lyrically). Many things in life hurt us or piss us off and make us want to yell and scream. Metal, just as all music, is the expression of the soul, the testimonies of those who write it. It is wise to understand what is being communicated. Then, the screams may make far better sense.

5.If you growl or do harsh vocals how do you keep your voice after such violent performances?

I do not growl or sing grind live (well, seldom). Gluttal attacks can make recovery difficult and lengthy (I found out the hard way). So my gluttal attacks are restricted to the studio.

6. Do you have a warm up routine? Tell us about it

I don’t really have a routine anymore, but when I did, I would warm up to “APSOG” by Fates Warning, or “Slave to the Grind” by Skid Row (depending on my mood).

7. Do you think power or performance is more important?

Hmm! Tricky question here. I don’t understand how you can actually have a performance without power. Performace is the natural outcome of power, it flows from power. I’d say power is most important... the performance will simply happen.

8. Who do you think gets unfair vocal praise, someone the world thinks is great but is not? / And who is great but does not get the credit they deserve?

You mean, which Pop singer do I want to single out? LOL! While I don’t like thinking on this line of thought, I’ll bite the bait. James Hetfield, I would say gets far more praise for his vocal work that it warrants. Nothing against James, he just isn’t impressive to me as a singer, or melodic enough (although I do think he is a fantastic musician because of his song writing and guitar work). Geoff Dee of Arcanum is definitely under-rated and under-exposed. His vocal range, dynamics, and control are off the charts. He has recently become one of my top 7 faves of all time!

9.Name your top 5 vocalist

In no particular order:
 Ray Alder,
 Geoff Tate,
 Michael Kiske,
 Steve Perry,
 Celine Dion

10.Micheal Buble or Jim Gillette? Just testing your skills here

Honestly, I’m going to have to flunk this one. No skills here! LOL! I have not even heard of this Michael fellow, but I totally liked Nitro. I had their demo cassette before they blew up. Jim has some pipes for sure.

11.Who do you love to listen to that would surprise people?

Michael English all the way. I absolutely love his vocal delivery and tonal quality. Not to mention all the soul he sings with. I’m pretty sure most would be surprised at this, because I’m not religious.

12.If you could remove the autotune from any singer who would it be?

Why would anyone want to hear anyone sing out of tune? LOL! I would not want to remove autotune, it saves so many ears! LOL!
