THE METAL TIMES VOKILL INTERVIEW : Tristan Kostman /Self Imposed Exile.

1.Please introduce yourself and tell us who you sing for.

T: My name is Tristan Kostman and I am the main vocalist for Self Imposed Exile.

D: My name is dave- I play bass and do clean vocals and backing heavy vox.

2.What / Who made you want to sing?

T: interesting story behind this, back when I was a freshman in highschool I had to good fortune to be able to work in a Haunted house. I found that I had the ability to do the whole screaming and growling bit with minimal effort and seeing as how I listened to a lot of metal back at that time I was inspired to try and get something going musically!

D: I heard my grandfather sing and play acoustic guitar when I was a young kid. I was pretty inspired from than on because I was just starting learning to play guitar. From then on, I learned to play guitar and sing, was introduced to heavy music, liked it. Learned bass with SIE, and here I am.

3.Who was the first singer you saw live that gave you chills?

T: I dont know that I have seen a singer that has given me chills. Possibly either Dani Filth or Johan Hegg.

D: I heard flight by night by rush at a friend's house playing in their home stereo when I was around 13. The guitars and Getty Lee's vocals just fascinated me. And made me

want toblearn how to do that.

4.Many people say heavy music is just screaming, How would you combat that statement?

T: Well, I supposed I'd have to say that outside of most power metal style bands and hard rock style bands they are generally right. It doesn't take any less talent to do what I do as it does to have a world class clean voice. You still have pitch and depth changes but it is in a severely more distorted way. Some bands chose to not have any range or much change at all when it comes to vocal cadence or flow and that is fine as long as it fits the music. The same way some pop artist dont use much out of their own comfort zone.

D: Yeah, some if it. That's alright that some people say that. I guess a lot of it boils down to how good you are at screaming. (N.It's just an extreme form of expression) if your going to scream and play instruments do good the thing.

5.If you growl or do harsh vocals how do you keep your voice after such violent performances?

T: It has been nearly 2 decades of trial and error to figure out how to do what I do. To learn the limitations and techniques I still use today. You try and learn very quickly after playing a show and then not being able to talk right for days. Basically, just try to keep yourself hydrated, used a liquid that can coat the inside of the throat to help stave off irritation or inflammation. And dont push super hard all the time every time.

D: Drink a lot of water. Dont try to destroy your voice, and practice control I guess.

6. Do you have a warm up routine? Tell u bout it ?

T: I dont, I normally just use the first song or two as a makeshift warmup.

D: sometimes. I'll just sit in my car sometimes and practice vocals. Like before shows I guess. I don't have any formal training at all so I just sing, you know?

7. Do you think power or performance is more important?

T: I believe that both are equally important. One without the other just leaves you being another forgettable band.

D: performance. Wo cares how loud one can be if it's not controlled.

8. Who do you think gets unfair vocal praise, someone the world thinks is great but is not? / And who is great but does not get the credit?

T: Ivan Moody. He has a great actual singing voice as portrayed in the movie The Devils Carninval. His musical endeavors however sound super forced and unnatural.

D: I dont like most modern style vocals, or maybe I just dont really listen to a lot of it. I try to just sort of stick to what I like to listen to, and ignore what I don't.

9.Name your top 5 vocalist

T: 1. Andreas Vingbäck (Dark Funeral)

    2. Spiros Antoniou (Septicflesh)

    3. Dani Filth (Cradle of Filth)

    4. Dave Matrise (Jungle rot)

    5. Nicholas Calonne (Nekrogoblikon)

D: 1. Marvin Gaye

     2. Elton John

     3. Peter Steele

     4. Geddy Lee

     5. Tommy Rodgers

10.Micheal Buble or Jim Gallette? Just testing your skills here

T: I am not really one for the crooner or the prettyboy hair metal. So one that note, I'd have to say pass on both.

D: I fail test

11.Who do you love to listen to that would surprise people?.

T: Voltaire, Emilie Autumn, Souther Culture on the Skids. I have a widely varied taste in music.

D: abstract stuff. I like MGMT a lot. I like Heilung a lot. I'm pretty all over the board. Idk

12.If you could remove the autotune from any singer who would it be?

T: Honestly, every musician that uses autotune as a crutch because they lack the natural or learned talent to actually do their craft.

D: idk I dont care what others do with their vocal shit. Do what you want…. I dont want control over that.
