Overt Enemy unleash controversial new video for “Mercenary”

2018-11-09 - Confused Records artist Overt Enemy have released a new music video for the song “Mercenary” from their debut EP “Inception” on www.Youtube.com/OvertEnemy.

Originally written/recorded for the 2016 movie “The Blood Tapes” and later re-recorded for their EP, Mercenary is a dark tale of subjugated people all over the world; written by a band that grew up in a border community.

The music video was directed by Jonathan Sims a native filmmaker from the Acoma Pueblo in New Mexico and owner of No Reservations Production www.norespro.com

“Overt Enemy reached out regarding a few potential video ideas and Mercenary immediately stood out as something I’d want to work on after reading the lyrics. Most people associate the term “mercenary” with war but the reality is that our world is full of people primarily concerned with making money at the expense of other people and are willing to step on necks just to get a paycheck. We see footage every day of tyranny and oppression of people in our own country and around the world. Overt Enemy supplied the soundtrack for that footage. “Mercenary” is a brutal reflection of the lives that people are forced to live, in a world where we are all mercenaries.” – Jonathan Sims (Director www.norespro.com)

“While the song may seem like direct commentary on the US/Mexico border the lyrics really apply to anyone worldwide that is forced to live with or flee from brutal violence. This song was written about people that are born into a world where violence is the norm and with the current national media focus on the migrant caravans from Central America we figured it’s a good time to get this video out there and participate in the conversation.” – Leo Ortiz (Guitarist/Vocals)

“We reached out to Jonathan and he immediately got the point of the song and had complete artistic freedom. We didn’t want to make the “typical” lyric video. It turns out our music is the perfect soundtrack to the real world. Growing up along the US/Mexico border we are all constantly aware of the dangers that people face just a few miles away from our homes so we can totally empathize with refugee situations in places like Africa, The Middle East, Asia or South America. Imagine if you grew up under the thumb of a warlord, criminal or dictator…I’d want to get my family out of that situation no matter the cost.”
– Rob Hahn (Guitarist)

“This video is definitely a statement but doesn’t pass judgement. It puts a spotlight on serious events that are directly affecting us and some of the implications that come with them.”
- Laura “Slayerella” Ortiz (Bass)

“Jonathan Sims created a powerful video that makes the viewer acutely aware of the unrest affecting our world today.” - Jaime Ayala (Drums)
