Ethnor - Q&A

1. Please tell us about the about the band and its members.

Sergey  [Keyboards] :
We have 6 guys in a band. I am in charge of all keyboards and synths and also play on a dumbek. Vladimir here is our golden voice, Taras and Dima are guitar players, Alexander is our bassist. And last but not least is Alexey, our drummer, the guy we are very proud of.

Taras [Solo Guitar] :

We can spend quite a time talking about our early days and all the turmoil we've been through. For me Ethnor is more than just a band, it's a creative process, an idea that spans out through music borders.

Dmitry (Rhythm Guitar) :
I like being in the band because after all these years it feels like we've become a family.

2. Who does the majority of the writing? Is it a group thing or does someone handle the writing duties?

D.: All the songs are written by Vladimir, Taras and Sergey. As for my part in this I mostly spend my time doing nothing and just rehearsing stuff (laughing)

S.: Yes, Taras writes almost everything by himself, I make my arrangements and some teaser, Vladimir composing all lyrics and his vocal parts.

Vladimir (Vocals): Since our music tends to be conceptual I discuss all the lyrics with Taras for historical accuracy. The concept story we've invented with him continues from song to song.

3. Where is the band based out of ?
Where did you want to the band to end up? What was the dream city to have as your home base once you got out of your scene?

D.: We are currently based in Sevastopol, Crimea. It's a great city, I really love it and would like to stay here.

S.: I don't think that changing our base is something necessary. I never thought about really. I heard Los Angeles is great. Or Philly (laughing)

T.: I doesn't matter where we will end up as far as this future home base to be will help us be more organized and make more music happen.

4. What is your genre? What bands do you use to explain  to people what you sound like?

T.: When we first met there was an intention to perform some great Industrial Death Metal, but obviously something went wrong and we went to playing Oriental Progressive Death. When people ask me about the sound I handle them our last EP (laughing)

D. Progressive Death, yes, but some people think otherwise.

V.: Yeah, we even got our page at Metal-Archives.Com deleted because someone decided we are playing Djent. Apparently, he didn't bothered to listen to our music.

S.: I tend to say that we're playing "Nile-meets-Septic Flesh-meets-Tool-meets-Akira Yamaoka-meets-Opeth-meets-Hans-Zimmer-and-so-on" music (laughs).

5. Can we buy anything from you Cd's shirts etc and where can we buy them?

V.: Yeah, we have some stuff available at ethnor.bandcamp.com. Shirts are almost sold out, but CDs are still plenty at hand.

S.: HAARBN Records store also distributes our EP all around the world.

D.: Would you kindly buy our records?

(everyone laughs)

6. Do you have studio time lined up anything new coming soon?

V.: We actually do.

T.: Studio time line up... I am, like, living there for two months straight!

S.: Yeah, we're working full time on something really, really big - it's a full-length album actually. We are also intend to release some classical, I mean classy, surprise before New Year's Eve. No spoilers!

D.: You won't be disappointed, that's for sure!

7. Have you ever been on tour? If so where and with who?

D.: Well, if concerts around the Crimea can be considered a tour than we are touring a lot.

T.: I don't think that can be considered a tour...

V.: We actually supported Neid during Crimean leg of their Russian tour. Italian Grindcore band, really great guys. Also there was a SMUTA band Crimean tour we were supporting.

8. What is your favorite band? Who are the bands who influenced you?

S.: My list is really huge. I mentioned some artists earlier. I can also add Gojira and Sadist. Those are my favourites and the ones that had influence on me as a musician.

D.: Decapited is my favourite band of all time.

V.: Pink Floyd definitely is my number one band. Also a good bunch of Swedish MDM bands like Entombed and Edge of Sanity and almost every Doom Metal band there is.

T.: Fear Factory, Nile, Cynic, Death, Karnivool, Tool, Between the Buried and Me, Meshuggah, Animosity, Akira Yamaoka...

9. Do you have a website? And do I have to verify that I am 18 to enter it?

S.: We don't have a website as for now, but we are present in almost every social network there is: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, you name it.

V.: We are totally SFW. Ethnor avoids any kinds of profanity both in social activity and lyrics, so it's totally safe.

D.: I can say that we are very friendly and open to any kind of conversation.

T.: I wonder what would be if everyone under 18 would be banned from internet...

10. What about your music do you want people to remember? What is the quality you want to hit people when they hit play?

T.: The epic scale. That is the quality I think we are about to hit people with. When our full-length album comes out I want the listener to be amazed not with the music itself but with the complex story it is telling. I wish I could say more, but I won't.

V.: We want to inspire people with our music. Inspire them with notion that good and quality music isn't about genre and heavyness. It's about the message it sends. We mix different stuff and come up with the fusion that is to attract every open-minded person...

S.: ...And the message is 'What the hell is going on down there?!"

D.: Just press Play and you'll get the idea.

11. Name a person who is integral to your band that nobody knows about , what person drives your band like they are part of the band? Who is the extra member ?

D.: Well,a lot of good people were there to help us, I can't name just one person.

V.: I totally agree with that.

S.: Noone was THAT integral, since we do almost everything ourselves.

T.: Hm, Jesus Christ maybe?

(everyone laughs)

12. Tell nerds like me tell us about your live rig and equipment.

V.: I use Neumann KMS 105 mic on stage and at rehearsal.

D.: AMT Distortion Pedal is all I ever need.

T.: Jackson Christian Olde Wolbers 7-string signature guitar, Lundgren M7 pickup, ISP decimator, ISP Fetish booster, Victor Custom Amp "Uadjet".

S.: I am performing with Line 6 and M-Audio Keyboards using Ableton Live Studio. We're also using some native instruments in our performances - I play on dumbek and Taras has armenian duduk.

13. What is your musical guilty pleasure that you are ashamed of?

D.: I can't, it's a secret!

S.: I don't think there is one.

V.: Is this really necessary? Okay, here you go then. I listen to some Pet Shop Boys and Depeche Mode occasionally.

T.: There is nothing to ashamed when you're listen to Tool being totally stoned (laughs).

14.If you could custom build a band who would be the members?

V.: There is no point to build a custom band, since the guys I am sitting with now are some of the best musicians I know.

S.: Totally.

T.: I would have a word or two with some ancient Peru and Egypt flute players.

D.: And I would have a word or two with any musician. It is always interesting to get to know different guys.

15.Message to the fans? What is it?

S.: Stay brutal!

D.: Listen to good music, stop sitting on your ass, stop texting stuff, get out and talk to real people. And also support your local scene and go to concerts!

V.: Follow your dream...

S.: ...To infinity and beyond!

(everyone laughs)

16.If you could bring back one metal legend who would it be?

D.: Egor Letov and Victor Tsoy.

V.: Those guys aren't metal, Dima.

D.: They are for me.

S.: I'd say Chuck Schuldiner.

T.: Johann Sebastian Bach.

17. Who in the band has the stinkiest feet?

S.: I didn't check!

D.: That is probably the best question in whole interview, but I will refrain from answer (laughs)

T.: Why do you ask, I wonder?

18. What is the worst album by your favorite band?

T.: I can't name one and that's good, right?

S.: The thing about favorite band is that it can't be bad in any way.

V.:  Ummagumma by Pink Floyd. Never managed to listen to it throughout, always got too bored somewhere in a middle.

19. How do you think your band will break up?
S.: I don't think it's gonna happen. I never thought about it.
T.: Does it have to do something with smelly feet?
(everyone laughs).

20.Last but not least , Zepplin or The Who?

V.: Zepplin!

D.: Led Zeppelin.

S.: Led Zeppelin.

T.: Black Sabbath!
