Interview with LIPSHOK

Scarlett Dark: lead vocals, keyboards, and songwriter
Scott Bullerwell: Guitar
Phil Jameson: Bass
Joe Londeree: Drums

Scarlett (myself) and Phil have been with the band from the beginning. Scott joined about a year and 1/2 ago, and Joe has been playing for 7 years with the group.  Guitar players have been hard to come by, 3 different players on 3 CDs, but Scott seems to be the one we've been looking for all along.
Everyone is experienced and professional. Lipshok was a corporate cover band for over 10 years and has played hundreds of shows as such, (including Santa Rita Jail and the Dublin Federal Penn in Northern California), and as an original band they entered the scene in 2009 to a tough and competitive circuit.

2. Who does the majority of the writing? Is it a group thing or does someone handle the writing duties?
Scarlett is the main songwriter in the band (at least so far...). She writes the music, lyrics, vocals, and does the arranging. Although everyone writes their own parts to the songs. In other words, because she writes from a keyboard perspective, everyone gets the main gist of the song, but when it comes together, it's a much greater beast than it was with just keyboards and vocals. And it takes on a life of it's own.

3. Where is the band based out of? Where did you want the band to end up? What was the dream city to have as your home base once you got our of your scene?
We are based out of Hayward, Northern Calfornia. Where we live now is great. We have a home with a built in practice and recording studio and what more do you need? If we end up here is fine. Northern California has a fantastic and diverse music scene and all you need. And when we get out of this scene, we still have our home.

4. What is your genre? What bands do you use to explain to people what you sound like?
Lipshok is described as gothic rock, sometimes symphonic metal, sometimes hard rock. Sometimes metal. It is heavy and yet melodic with hooks and imagery. Nightwish combined with Ghost combined with Evanescence, Within Temptation, and reaching for Sixx AM and Janis Joplin.... if that explains it I don't know, but what a combination!

5. Can we buy anything from you? CDs, shirts, etc. and where can we buy them?
www.cdbaby.com has all our CDs as well as Amazon, Itunes, etc. Shirts and merch we sell mostly at shows right now.

6. Do you have studio time lined up? Anything new coming soon?
Besides playing some live shows, we are working on a lot of new material for a new CD in 2019.

7. Have you ever been on tour? If so, where and with whom?
We have not officially toured (having day jobs and families can make that tough), but we have played with some national acts. April Wine (a long time ago...), Greg Kihn (also a long time ago...), members of Nightranger and 38 Special (very long ago...), otherwise just playing around Nor Cal is a lot right now.

8. What is your favorite band? Who are the bands that influenced you?
Besides Lipshok and our own music being my fave, there is Nightwish, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Lacuna Coil, and Within Temptation. Even Elton John.

9. Do you have a website? And do I have to verify that I am over 18 to enter it?
Yes, our website is www.lipshok.com. And it wouldn't even occur to me to make it that you had to be over 18 to see it.

10. What about your music do you want people to remember? What is the quality you want to hit people when they hit play?
Good question. I want people to remember stories about the mystical, , mythical, the unknown, the mysterious, the dangerous, and the imaginative. I want people to let their spirit fly and think about the other places and worlds they may not see or wonder about normally, let loose your soul and dream of magic.

11. Name a person that is integral to your band that nobody knows about, what person drives your band like they are part of the band? Who is the extra member?
Scarlett drives the band, the extra member is her (my) personality disorders.

12. Tell nerds like and us about your rig and live equipment.
Scarlett plays all Roland keyboards, simple to operate. Her mics are Sennheiser and AKG. Wireless. Amp is peavey as they are road worthy.
Scott plays 7 and now 8 string guitars as that tone is essential. I don't even know what his amps are, I just know their expensive and yet light.
Phil plays 5 string bass and always different cabs. I've seen the name David Eden...
And Joe plays a new Yamaha drum set. It's supposed to be extremely good as all the other drummers are always asking him about it.
I (Scarlett) am not really equipment savvy as I focus on singing and playing. Probably I am the wrong person to even attempt to answer this question, but since I am the only one doing this interview I am stuck...lol...

13. What is your musical guilty pleasure that you are ashamed of?
I can't think of anything. I do like opera though. But I am not ashamed of it...

14. If you could custom build a band, who would be the members?
Exactly what I have right now.

15. Message to the fans. What is it?
I don't know how many "fans" we have, but if you like music and you like hard rock and you like great stories of magic and mystery and Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, and a starlit sky and a beautiful dark forest, and the astral plane and following your own life path, Lipshok's music is for you.
