THE OUTSIDER INTERVIEW

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

The Outsider is a one man band, founded in 2016 by its only member, Nibsen.
My aim was to give life to the songs I wrote during many years before launching the project, set a solid concept and have some very special guests, I achieved this by having members of bands like Therion, Armageddon and also the multi-instrumentist Snowy Shaw as guest singer.

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

The Outsider is the title of a horror tale written by H.P. Lovecraft, I think it's a tale that perfectly sums up th cosmic horror concept Lovecraft wanted to show to the world, and cosmic horror is the main lyrical theme of the debut album of The Outsider

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are
there any local bands you could recommend?

The Outsider is based in Mexico City, Mexico. In my personal opinion, mexican metal scene is very big in numbers, but real good  bands are sometimes hard to find, I think that in the last decade and a half very good bands have come up and many of them are starting to achieve international success, this is extremely good because it can lead to growth of the scene, I am quite sure that many great bands will come and will have international success too. My personal favorites are: Anima Tempo (prog/djent), Tulkas (Thrash), Introtyl (Brutal death) Lacrimacorpus Dissolvens (prog/doom/ambient) Thanatology (brutal death/grindcore) Dark Matter (post metal) DelDesierto (mexican folk) Anna Fiori (symphonic), Glass Mind (prog/fusion/instrumental) Acrania (latin mixed with death) The Arkitecht (prog) and The Legion of Hetheria (symphonic) among some other I don't remember right now

4. How would you describe your style?

I like to describe it as symphonic death metal, but even if it gives you an idea of what to expect is not enough to describe the whole music concept, it is mainly symphonic death metal but you can also find many middle-east music melodies, progressive influences and some experimental parts like the dodecaphonic ending in "The Worst comes at night", also the solely intrumental parts like the fugue in "Total Dementia for Lucidity" and the choir composition in "Polaris".

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

I have three releases out by now, "The Outsider" is the full-lenght, debut and main release, where the concept is established, "Orchestral Renditions from the Unknown" are the same songs from the debut album but in their orchestral/instrumental versions, "Ancient Beast of the Apocalypse" is an EP, it contains a new version of the title track with Snowy Shaw on vocals and unreleased songs from the debut album recording and songwritting sessions, so all three releases are connected, but if I shall recommend a release to start with it will be the debut album, then the EP and if people are into orchestral songs, the orchestral release. You can expect many things, my music is influenced by many types of music and I try to blend some on my songs, so you can't expect a linear work.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

Yes, I am currently working on the upcoming full-lenght, this time with diferent approaches, I am blending more metal subgenres into my music, like black, doom and progressive. I am getting experimental as well, I want to take my music to the next level and evolve or at least change, I feel like I am writting more mature and well blended songs, but keeping elements of my already released music, specially the orchestral arrangements, the middle-east music influences and the death metal driven vocals. There will be also more special guests!

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

As a one man band it is difficult to put a live show because you have to look for musicians and a place to rehearse, although it is in my plans to go live I am afraid it won't happen very soon.
8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?
Finish the writing process of the new album and then recording it and releasing it, also keep promoting what is already out, an official video and a lyric video are in the works, as well as a play-through.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your
music for the first time?

I would like them to remember that, even if I have clear influeces from many bands, I am not trying to be like anyone else musically speaking, it is hard to find your own trademark sound, but it is something I will always work on. So I hope they can expect something different.
