BATTERY DRUM INTERVIEW : Stephen Scheele / SINFOOL.

1. What is your name and what band do you play for?

My name is Stephen Scheele and I play for the metal band SINFOOL.

2. Who made you want to play drums and why?

No one in particular really.   Music was required in my school growing up and percussion is something I had a knack for.

3. When did you get your first kit? Tell us about it…

Got my first kit when I was about 5 or 6.  It was a beat up old Rogers drum kit.  Just a small bass drum, tom, and snare.  Real fragile kit but did me well for that time.

4. Where your parents supportive of you and your loud / expensive new habit?

My parents were supportive of my musical habits.  Although I wanted to play the Sax, drums came more naturally.  Which I think they regretted at times I’m sure.  For the most part music and other hobbies kept me out of trouble, so they supported it.  But I had to work to earn gear.

5. What drum performance on an album is perfection to you?

Man that’s a hard one to answer.  There are so many drummers that just bring their A game to their album.  I would say Danny Carey on the Undertow Album from Tool and Mike Heller on Fear Factory’s GENEXUS Album are just outstanding.  Also Gene Hoglan on the new Testament album is pretty wicked as well.

6. Tell us about your current kit and set up in DETAIL.

My current kit is a TAMA Imperial Star.  22x18 bass drum, 12 tom, 13 tom, 14 floor tom, 16 floor tom, and a 14 snare drum. All Black.  I play on Remo heads – Powerstroke.  I use Soultone Cymbals although I have a few Saluda’s on my kit.  I have 3 crashes, 2 splashes, 1 china, 1 ride, and my Hi-Hats.  It’s a good kit with a lot of attack.  It has been a very dependable kit.

7. If you could have a dream kit tell us about it in DETAIL

I would love a custom maple with walnut drum kit.  Roughly with the same set up I have now.  I really like the Varus Drums.  But there are a few other custom s brands that have a great tone to them as well.   But that price tag though.

8.Name your top 5 drummers excluding Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy

Top 5.  Damn that’s a tough one.
 I would have to pick,
 Dave Lombardo,
 Vinny Paul,
 Danny Carey,
 Buddy Rich,
 Raymond Herrera.

9. Do you prefer Live or Studio?

I would say live more.  I really enjoy playing out, interacting with other bands and people.  The pressure and challenge of it is something I enjoy.  I do however really love studio work.  I feel this makes you a better player in the end and really allows you to tap into your creation.

10. Do drummers really get all the chicks and if so how do we convince the guitarist?

Well you know….Us drummers have great cardio and we know how to handle our wood.  We can’t help it that we are sexy like that.  Now you could try to convince a guitar player this, but you better off showing a color grid to a blind man.
