THE DEEP BASS INTERVIEW / REDEFINED

1.Why Bass?

When I was first getting into music I was a big fan of Red Hot Chili Peppers and wanted to be like Flea.

2.Do you think it is unfair or just lack of knowledge bass gets so little credit?

Lack of knowledge. Most people A) think it’s easy to play and doesn’t require the same amount of skill as other instruments; and B) don’t always realize they hear it in music because it doesn’t stand out, but once you take it away they’ll notice something sounds off.

3.What kind of bass do you use? Model , color , year , And why?

Main stage bass is an LTD B-206SM. Natural wood finish with spalted maple body. Always been a fan of ESP and LTD basses so I took the first chance to get one when I found a 6 string in my area.

4.Tell us about your amplification

Main stage rig I use is an Ampeg SVT2 Classic with a Mesa Boogie 6x10 Powerhouse Cab. Also have a compressor in my rack to complete the sound

5. With all of that being said do you feel tone is an important thing for bass?

Yes, bass tone can completely change the feel of a song. There’s no one right or wrong tone, but based on what you’re playing it may be better to have something low and smooth, or maybe getting funky and want a tone that’s more punchy.

6.Do you prefer 5 strings over 4 string?

I play 6 string basses, but I think bass players should play what they’re comfortable with

7.Who is your favorite bassist?

If I had to narrow it to 5 I’d say Flea, Cliff Burton, Ryan Martinie, Geezer Butler, and Geddy Lee most of my influence from. Victor Wooten is still the best though, can’t be touched.

8. Who is your least favorite bassist?

Might be a more boring answer but I don’t have a problem with any bass players really. I love all styles and can learn a little bit from most players.

9.Why do you think women seem to be attracted to playing bass?

I didn’t know this was really a thing. I see a lot more women singing or playing guitar than bass.

10. What bassist dead or alive would you like a private lesson with?

Jaco Pastorius it’s a little out there but I feel like I could learn so much jamming with him for an hour or so

11. Bonus question

Bobby Doll , Nikki Sixx , Les Claypool , Billy Sheehan  which is more ridiculous and why
Bobby Doll and Nikki Sixx are nothing special as players but are amazing showmen, Billy Sheehan was a diamond buried in the hair metal scene, but Les Claypool is most ridiculous. He has his own wacky style and pretty much does things his way in his own world.
