The new Traditional Heavy Metal band of Andrea Tito, bass-player and main author/composer of the historical MESMERIZE, on the Italian metal scene for over 25 years!

 Born in 2014 as a solo project, with the release of the debut CD "Better Beware!" (May 2017) BLACK PHANTOM become a proper band to all effects, starting an important string of concerts and participations to important Metal Festivals throughout Italy. The Milan-based band has just finished recording their second album "Zero Hour Is Now", which will be released in March 2020, once again by the label Punishment 18 Records. From there, an intense live activity will start all over the peninsula again, supporting the brand-new album.

1. Tell us your name and the band you play for

This is Jager Felice and Rob Mathews. We play guitar in Levels.

2. Who made you want to pick up the guitar

Jager - Wes Borland / Limp Bizkit
  

Rob- My dad was a guitar tech and teacher for a local shop for many years. I always thought what he did was very cool and asked him to teach me. After I got a hold of a copy of ‘Ride the Lightning’-Metallica.. it set everything pretty well in stone for me and I gravitated to music more heavily. 

3. Are you self taught or did you take lessons?

Jager - Self taught.
  

Rob- Previous question partially sums it up however; my dad’s lessons were based on teaching me the basics enough to be able to teach myself the music that I wanted to learn by ear. 

4. Can you read music, Can you read tab?

Jager - Can’t read music, but read and write tablature in Guitar Pro.

Rob- I can read tabs but cannot read music whatsoever. 

5. Do you feel like you have your own sound / tone ?

Jager - In a time where modelers are the standard, I think we set ourselves apart by incorporating plug ins live and running them through the 90’s Mesa Boogie 2:Ninety power amp. It gives it the warmth that a lot of modelers are lacking even with custom IRs.

Rob- I second with Jager on this. I feel like the exploration to seek a modern tone with a touch of classic was certainly a defining moment. Dalton (drummer) and Jager really put their heads together to do something effective and also outside of the norm. Having unlimited amounts of plug ins at our fingertips on top of being powered through mesa tubes is not a bad way to live.

Jager - Fishman Fluence Modern on the passive voicing

Rob- Dimarzio Fusion Edge. Passive. They are really well rounded because of how clear and mid ranged focused they are.

Jager - Nope, but the Mac has a keyboard.

Jager - Some custom guitars, artist used guitars, whatever plug in sounds good at the time and Marshall / Mesa cabs.

Rob- My personal Dream rig would be a custom Kiesel in Tiffany Blue, a private stock PRS McCarty 7 string, Kemper profiler and a custom cab with Celestion V30s. 
  

11. What guitarist can you not stand?

Jager - Anyone that stands still on stage.

Rob- The ones with backhanded compliments.

12. Is tone more important or is technique?

Jager - Technique. Practice on a clean channel so you don’t have overdrive / gain cover up your mistakes.

Rob- I feel like dialing in tone is a technique in itself but can’t be highlighted without precision in your playing.

1.Why Bass?

The age old “there were already two guitarist” reason.

Fools don’t respect the rythm.

A 2019 custom Agile 5 string looks like a nice brown marble countertop.

Darkglass plugin through an Acoustic 8x10 cab. 

5. With all of that being said do you feel tone is an important thing for bass?

Yes, especially after some sound checks I’ve heard. 

6.Do you prefer 5 strings over 4 string?
   

Depends on what I’m playing. I like the size of the neck more on a 5 string though. 
  

7.Who is your favorite bassist?

David Ellefson because I was a big Megadeth fan as a teenager.

8. Who is your least favorite bassist?

Myself. 

9.Why do you think women seem to be attracted to playing bass?
This is the first I’m hearing of it.

BATTERY DRUM INTERVIEW : Dalton Kennerly / Levels

1.What is your name and what band do you play for?

My name is Dalton Kennerly, and I play drums for the progressive metalcore band, Levels.
  

2.Who made you want to play drums and why?

It’s really more of a “what” instead of “who”. But I’ll get into that in a second! Once I immersed myself into playing drums, that’s when I began to find drummers who I really looked up to. I was heavily inspired by Joey Jordison of Slipknot. I thought his kit was awesome and he always did these crazy drum solos on a riser that flipped and spun around. Their music just always got me pumped. The production quality was so good as well. I was also a big fan of Daniel Adair of Nickelback. When I saw them live for the first time, I was just amazed at how tight his playing was. He really showcased his playing more live than on a recording. That was something I aspired to do myself.

3.When did you get your first kit? Tell us about it…

So, I was originally planning to play guitar. My little brother was the one who got a new “First Act” drum set for Christmas, and I got a guitar. I never really could figure it out. So one day, I opened up the drum set from the box (that my little brother never opened), and I set it up and started playing! I am all self taught. I watched this one guy on YouTube a lot. He always wore a Tigger costume with the hood down so you could see his face. That dude ripped! I also knew this kid in high school (also named Dalton) that played drums. He was two grades above me and I sort of looked up to him as a drummer. I have to give him credit for teaching me a few dope beats and believing in me.

4.Where your parents supportive of you and your loud / expensive new habit?

Bless my mom (Teri) and my dad (Kyle). They were so supportive. Looking back on it, I can’t believe my dad put up with 6-7 kids at his house every week for band practice and eating all his food haha. My mom too when we got the show going at her house! My dad bought me my first big drum kit. It was a Joey Jordison signature series. I still have that same kit today! I just modified it and made it smaller. I started in my bedroom, moved to my dad’s garage, and finally turned my mom’s shed outback into a recording studio. My parents have always been so supportive of my dreams. I could not have made it this far without them and all my family. I am truly lucky for that.
  

5.What drum performance on an album is perfection to you?

Of Mice & Men. ‘The Flood’.

6.Tell us about your current kit and set up in DETAIL.

Our guitarist Rob and I took all the black wrap off the Joey Jordison set and sanded it down. We put white Rhino Liner on half the set, and black wood stain on the other half. I currently play the Rhino Lined set which includes a 22” kick, 13” rack tom, 14” and 16” floor toms. My Snare is currently a DW 13”, BUT I just ordered a custom Dark Horse Percussion snare. Stay tuned for that beauty! I love my DW 9000 pedals. I play mostly Meinl cymbals. 20” Byzance extra thin hammered crash, 18” Byzance duel crash, 14” Paiste PST 5 thin crash, 14” Meinl pure alloy hi-hats, 18” Wuhan China, 18” Paiste Alpha rock china, 10” Paiste Alpha metal splash, 20” Zildjian ZBT ride, and a Meinl bell. I also like Vater 5b Drum Sticks.

7.If you could have a dream kit tell us about it in DETAIL

I really like my current set. If I could just get the same dimensions but built by Dark Horse, and have all Meinl Cymbals.. THAT would be it.

1. My name is Blake "blade" Remson and I play drums in the band Infinite Sin.

Who made you want to play drums and why?


2. Umm, nobody in particular; it was just a habit of nature.

When did you get your first kit? Tell us about it…


3. I got my first drum set when I was eight. Ever since I could remember I would tap and bang on everything ( teachers hated me for it lol). My father noticed my rising interest and asked me if I wanted to go out and get a new set or buy my cousins. I went with my cousins and I don't remember now what brand they were but they were blue.
Where your parents supportive of you and your loud / expensive new habit?


4. Definitely ! My parents were very supportive and still are to this day.

What drum performance on an album is perfection to you?


5. One that comes to mind is for those about to rock by AC/DC. Phil Rudd does his master four on the floor slow and steady Rocking and fucking rolling. That song showcases confident drumming with great dynamics. You can't ask for much more!

8. This is a very hard question, I can't narrow it down to just five; I have pages full of drummers but the drummers that have been influential to my playing are Alex Van Halen, Vinnie Paul, Lars Ulrich, Igor Cavalera, Dave Lombardo, Bill Ward, Mitch Mitchell, and Ian Paice to name a few.

ETERNAL REST damn Australia is Grind country! and Metal Coffee LOVES IT!

ETERNAL REST are a death metal act from Brisbane, Australia. Intense and uncompromising, the band demonstrate a prowess and sound that is comparable to high profile death metal acts such as NILE, BEHEMOTH and DYSCARNATE.

.I took lessons  for  3 1/2 yrs with Joe Stump,  then  the started doing my own  learning and creating  my own sound style

Passive pick ups,   Seymour Duncans  are my favorite,  Im also  Endorsed  with them , my Biggest Endorsement  so far

 Im Endorsed with  2 amplifier  companies ,   Revv amplifier ,  i have a 40 watt one  , adn ZT Amplifier , there more for small amps ,  i have one use , you can take it anywhere , little cube amp.    I have 4 Marshall  amplifiers,   3 JCM 800s    2 from the 1980s , one is a remake ,  in the early 2000s . I have  a 2010  JVM Marshall amp.   1998  5150 II   Peavey  amplifier .   Cabs ,  i have a  custom Avatar bottom cab.  A Marshall  top cab ,  900.   a Peavey cab bottom , that came from  a VTM   120 Head I used to have,  and an  Ampeg top cab,   basically a copy of a Marshall cab.

 I have a pedal board , but i keep it basic for live ,  just using it for the power continer to plub into my amp,  i jsut use the distortion of the amps,   sometimes reverb either from amp or pedal,     Basically i experiment    like reverb ,  delay,   ,  or   chorus , reverb,  or reverb , flanger,   or like the last show i  did, reverb,  chorus and flanger , which was interesting  ,

Music is a form of self expression,  so  say  some one famous , i would get to jam with, would l look at how i do things and vice versa, and some one thats not  known or good you pick up  things from .  But i would love to jam with Eddie Van Halen    some day, or  any of those people i mentioned on the top 5 

Pulchra Morte

 Greetings! We in the Pulchra Morte camp are pleased to share with you this song, entitled “Knife Of The Will”, as a preview of our forthcoming album. Writing for this album commenced immediately upon completion of our prior effort, Divina Autem Et Aniles, and continues our journey into what has become known as “death doom” metal.

While Jeffrey Breden remains the primary songwriter, this album is our first written with Jarrett Pritchard as collaborator from the impetus. His participation brings together the two guitarists and really enables us to highlight the back-and-forth that comes with two guitarists. Being able to have “dueling leads” and additional complementary melody lines allowed us to push further into the realm of the possible. The addition of John Porada’s expertise on bass brought the sound we were looking for and helped ground the tracks in lock-step with the drums, while adding the unique sound and range of Adam Clemans’ voice really elevated this work. We are extremely proud to have them join the brotherhood.

   As for tone.. That's an endless subject. I have been told from people that it's easy to tell it’s me just from hearing me play though. So maybe..

I've been playing a Halo, Hellfire. It's a huge, pointy, beastly thing. Black with red pin stripe. It has cross bones as fret inlays. EMG 81/85. And a kahler tremolo.

I have 81/85 actives in most. That's another endless subject. Pickups. Hmmmmm. Guitar players can talk tone for days......

The Peavey 6505+!!! Great tone! Balls for days! I run through a rugged Fender MH 4/12 cab loaded with 4 Celestion G12 - 100.

I love to tone of the amp. I try not to muddy it up with extra noise. Right now I keep it simple with a Digitech Whammy and noise suppressor. I run a BBE Sonic Max through the effects loop too.

It doesn't exist at the moment. If it did, I'm pretty sure it's outside my price range.

Usually the guy that plays before me, or after me. Lol

My theory is this. Tone would be your canvas, technique would be the paint. I mean, you gotta have both. End result is the music. I am the paint brush in this mess.

We are a Psyfi/Stoner Rock band from the Pacific North Waste not to far off the Hanford Nuclear dump site. We’re working on releasing our second album(hopefully on vinyl) by the end of August just in time for our summer tour and we just released our newest single Radiation  Blues.

AXEMEN GUITAR INTERVIEW : Leo Vela / Unholy Desecration

1.Tell us your name and the band you play for

I'm Leo Vela and I play with these fine gents in Unholy Desecration. I also have a personal band called Monuments of Sin with my best friend Memo Leal who I worked with for many years in a band called Slow Grind.

2.Who made you want to pick up the guitar
My Dad actually. 

Growing up he was the lead guitar player in a band called the Texas Rebel Band. Mainly Tejano and contemporary music. But my Dad could do all of the leading stuff and complex riffing. It was only as I got older that I realized not a lot of people could do what he did and that he was rather exceptional. Then he showed me that video of Hendrix burning his guitar on stage and the rest, as they say, is history.
  

3.Are you self taught or did you take lessons?

Self taught actually. My Pops taught me the open chords we all start with, then I used my ear to start learning stuff on my own. When he saw that, he said he had nothing more to teach me as that is how he taught himself.

4. Can you read music, Can you read tab?

Music, hell no lol. Tab, yes I can. I just find it easier to figure it out sonically though.

5.Do you feel like you have your own sound / tone ?

For a long time I did not, but over two decades I've been told often enough that I have a certain "sound" so to speak. Kind of atmospheric and dark on the leading end, and thrashy and pick heavy on the rhythm.

6.Tell us about your guitar ( brand ,model . year , color )

My baby for many years now is my Lamia:
BC Rich NJ Series Blue Burst Warlock
That I got around year 2001. They had JUST come out and I got the pick of the litter as I worked at the best local music store lol. Fantastic neck and very responsive. I especially love that her top horn digs directly on my heart when I sit down and practice with her haha.

I'd like to get an American Warlock with all the trimmings, Black Burst. Schaller Floyd Rose, ebony fretboard, same EMG setup, beast headstock, running through a Triple Mesa and full stack. I'l stick to Boss for my pedalboard cause they are the shit. Whatever is the latest model GT they have.

Yngvie Malmsteen, I think, I dunno, kinda like that he stays true. Nevermind, I take that back lol. I really don't have any dislike of guitarists as they all have something to offer.

Greetings I am Fremitus Diaboli (Jaime) I am the Vocalist for Unholy Desecration

  

2.What/Who made you want to sing? 

I was into music at a very young age, but never picked up an instrument, until I got to high school I met friends with the same interest in music but they all played an instrument and I didn't and I wanted to be part of the band that they were forming, so I just gave it a shot at doing vocals, I found that I had a talent for it & of course over the years I've developed my vocals to what they are today

3.Who was the first singer you saw live that gave you chills? 

Now is that the first singer I saw live or the first singer that actually gave me chills ? Cause if answering the later then it would be King Diamond witnessing the master at what he does best is enough to give anyone chills

4.Many people say heavy music is just screaming, How would you combat that statement? 

Step into my shoes & try to do what I do

5.If you growl or do harsh vocals how do you keep your voice after such violent performances?

 I get that question a lot & I've never really thought about it, I guess just rest your voice afterwards

I just usually sing along with songs of my own band or bands similar to our style prior to practice or a show

7. Do you think power or performance is more important? 

In my opinion power is part of the performance, if you don't have the power in your vocals then the performance is lacking.

8. Who do you think gets unfair vocal praise, someone the world thinks is great but is not? And who is great but does not get the credit? 

To the first part, Phil Enselmo, in my opinion he is overrated, To the second part King Diamond that guy is in his 60s & Still onstage kicking ass
