THE DEEP END BASS INTERVIEW : Ryan Garrett / FROM ASH TO STONE

1.Why Bass?

A. Growing up I always wanted to be a drummer and a guitar player...at the same time and I find bass to be the link between the two. I like that I can be aggressive playing bass and perform drum like sounds (slap/pop) while also keeping the rhythm/melody. Not to mention playing   anything other than the bass would be highly illogical.

2.Do you think it is unfair or just lack of knowledge bass gets so little credit?

A. I think it's a bit of both. I'd say most non-musicians have the lack of knowledge of what bass
really does to a song or what its purpose is. In my experience there are
not alot of musicians who want to play the bass, who would've thought? Most bass players   are originally guitar players or drummers who decided to pick up the bass because they couldn't get a bass player to join. A good bassist is hard to come by these days when you can just be an 8 string guitarist.

3.What kind of bass do you use? Model , color , year , And why
A.   2010 Ibanez Sr505 brown mahogany-I wanted a full active 5 string bass with a fast neck.

Sterling by Music Man StingRay Ray4 black gloss with upgrades.-Many of my bass influences play a music man bass so I figured it had to be a good bass.

4.Tell us about your amplification

A. Aaaaaand in the bass corner weighing in at a staggering 4lbs is the Gallien-Krueger MB500 500-Watt Ultra Light Micro Bass Head. Did you say 4lbs? That's right!! Only 4lbs and this little
guy really packs a punch! Wow that must be really nice on the bass players back when loading
gear around! But that's not all the MB500 also gives you powerful tone-shaping options, including an active 4-band EQ that's equipped with a contour switch and a foo tswitchable boost control that lets you kick in extra punch when you need it.

5. With all of that being said do you feel tone is an important thing for bass?

A. YESS!!! Tone is everything. New bass strings are a must!! And stop scooping
the damn mids!!!

6.Do you prefer 5 strings over 4 string?

A. I mean who doesn't love a low B string am I right or am I right? I wouldn't say I prefer one over the other and I'm still yet to play a 6 string bass so perhaps I'll prefer that.

7.Who is your favorite bassist?

A. Well this is a hard question. I'll try to narrow it down to 6 and its still a hard decision. Geddy Lee-Rush, Justin Chancellor-Tool, Tim Commerford-RATM, Chris Duffy- Magic Beans, Les Claypool-Primus, Flea-RHCP

8. Who is your least favorite bassistit's

A. Bobby dall, sid vicious, nikki sixx

9.Why do you think women seem to be attracted to playing bass?
A. Bass players do it deeper! We keep the groove and thats what makes the ladies dance.

10. What bassist dead or alive would you like a private lesson with?

A. Les claypool or Geddy Lee

11. Bonus question

Bobby Doll , Nikki Sixx , Les Claypool , Billy Sheehan  which is more ridiculous and why

A. Hands down Billy Sheehan. Just watch a video of that guy. He shreds a bass like its a guitar and im pretty sure he has an endless supply of coke.
