THE DEEP END BASS INTERVIEW : The Jeff Carlson Band CORY KAY-POLIZZI BASS

1.Why Bass?

I started out on guitar when I was younger. We had a gig where our bass player didn’t show up. At the time, we owned all the bass equipment. I played bass for that gig and enjoyed it so much, I never looked back. From there I really started to sit down and learn bass lines from popular songs off the radio. Bass was so much easier for me to play and understand.

2.Do you think it is unfair or just lack of knowledge bass gets so little credit?

I love this question and it gets asked so much. It challenges me to stand out in a song, even it is for a second or two. If you come up with something memorable people think, “Hey, cool bass there”. If not, it makes me try harder to come up with something better. Not all songs need me to stand out, but when we get that little moment of spotlight it’s cool and I’m cool with that. I had a famous singer tell me one time to stand out with a different sound or tone. That always stuck with me. I think it gives people knowledge of the bass when you do.

3.What kind of bass do you use?

Model , color , year , And why…I play G&L Basses, SB-2, SB-1 and L-2000 Basses. I love the feel, tone and pickups in those basses.

4.Tell us about your amplification
…Ampeg heads, Ampeg cabs and Tech 21 pedals

5. With all of that being said do you feel tone is an important thing for bass? Absolutely!!!

6.Do you prefer 5 strings over 4 string?

 4 strings for sure.

7.Who is your favorite bassist?

I’m old school, I like the bass players from the 70’s decade. Fleetwood Mac, Led Zeppelin, old Heart, ELO, old Chicago, Eagles, Triumph, all classic rock.

8. Who is your least favorite bassist?
 I don’t have one

9.Why do you think women seem to be attracted to playing bass?

I don’t know, but God bless them!!!

10. What bassist dead or alive would you like a private lesson with?

John Paul Jones! And so I can get the inside on what they were thinking in the studio and why

11. Bonus question
Bobby Doll , Nikki Sixx , Les Claypool , Billy Sheehan  which is more ridiculous and why…

None, they all have sold a lot of music and they all are living the dream. There is nothing ridiculous about that.
