Dark Legacy interview

1. What is the name of your band and how did you come up with it? What is your name and what do you do for the band?
DT: I'm Daniel T and I handle the mic in the band - the main microphone that is. Occasionally I play some keys. Dark Legacy is our band´s name and we took that name shortly after I was elected to the band ... 2004, or something like that.

MD: I`m Mikael D and in Dark Legacy I play all kinds of keyboards and sometimes acoustic guitar. I also write most of the music together with Daniel T. The band name is our trademark and I think a band name should be easy to remember. The name Dark Legacy sounds good for an metal act.

2.Tell us where you are based and describe the scene. How do you think where you are located influences your sound.

DT: We're from Sweden and Sweden is a very important link when it comes to this kind of music we are doing. There have been a lot of metal around during our childhoods and you have been following these bands for a long time. Many bands in this particular genre never seem to be abandoning, so you can follow bands year after year after year ...

MD: In the northern parts of Europe, like Sweden and Norway, metal has it´s own, characteristic sound. In Sweden we sometimes talk about "the Gothenburg sound", bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity. I think Dark Legacy sounds like a mix of our own musical influences and the fact that we grown up in Sweden, the country where the fall and the winter is dark and cold. That´s our Dark Legacy.

3. Who influences your sound that would surprise people?

MD: Jeff Lynne and his Electric Light Orchestra and a lot of composers of classical music; J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart and E. Grieg. That may be a bit surprising for people who think metal, rock and classical music is far from each other.

4. Are you endorsed by musical companies , if so who , and if not who would you like to be endorsed by?

DT: Nothing we have actively pursued. If we would get nice deals then of course we'll considering it and I guess we especially would be endorsed by manufacters of wich stuff we use today.

5. When you started what was your ultimate goal? And how close to the goal are you now?

DT: For my own part, the goal has always been to express myself, to create things and have fun together. In addition, it's of course a kick to perform your work and influence people around.

MD: I started a long time ago and my goal was to make my living on music and music was my profession for many years, but Dark Legacy doesn´t bring us a lot of money and it´s not the mainpurpose with the band. We want to make music that we like and play it and produce it for people who wants to listen to it. That´s the goal so we have actually alreday reached the goal but of course we can make it bigger and better and I wouldn´t complain if it will bring us money! What can be more satifying than make a living on what you love?

6. In today's digital environment it takes creative strategy to keep things moving. What creative ideas do you have to keep your band relevant over time?

DT:  I don't care much about it. It's just fun to keep going.
MD: Quite simple; keep on playing and never give up.

7. We've all seen a terrible live band that is awesome on CD. Is that cool with you or do you lose respect for bands that cannot pull it off live?

DT: I see between the fingers the first and second time. Then I probably get a little tired. When you play live, there are always external circumstances to blame; It can be a bad day shape, bad sound techniques and more. But if you are going to play live at all, you should be able to maintain a certain standard over time. If not then you just ruin for yourself.

MD: I don´t want Dark Legacy to be a band that can´t play our stuff live. The live scene is very important but it doesn´t bother me if other bands are awesome on CD but sounds terrible live. To record an album and make it sound good is always a tough work so congratulations to all of them who succed with their albums. You can be an studioact and you can be an liveact and you can be both. It´s your own choice. .

8. Tell us your “core” are you Metal , Rock , Punk , Pop etc because people just have to categorize these days you know?

DT: If we speak of Dark Legacy, we're Symphonic Death Metal. Melodic metal with Death, Doom, Dark, Heavy and a little Black influences. Something like that.

MD: And sometimes we also are a bit progressive. It´s rewarding to experiment with influences from other genres.

9. This is a tough question but a very real reality, Is your band actually talented or just popular? Many bands make it with a cliche or publicity stunts etc. Would you accept fame even if it was just because of being the “ in” thing or is it actually important to you that you gain favor with talent?

MD: I can´t say we are a very popular artists at the moment. I mean Iron Maiden are an popular metal act! I hope we are talented in some way but I don´t think about it that way. We do what we do as well as we can for people who wants to listen to us and see us. Bands like Dark Legacy doesn´t become the "in" thing! Avicii and Swedish House Mafia are "in" things. Anyway... Rest In Peace Avicii.

10. Tell us what to expect from you live. Nothing is more boring than watching bands stare at the floor and bob their heads to music nobody but the band knows. What can your band offer in a live setting that people will remember?

DT: We try to entertain and maintain energy in our shows. Fire and cool things like that are never wrong if you can get it.

MD: Some people are musicians, others are entertainers. The way I see ourselves we are both. I grew up with Alice Cooper, KISS and Ozzy. I wish we could put on a show like them but we do what we can to give an ultimate show. As you said: "Nothing is more boring than watching bands star at the floor..." I don´t understand why you enter the stage if you´re not willing to give the audience a memorable show!?!

11. What releases have you put out , When will we see something new?

DT: On March 29th our next fullength will be out on CD and Digital via Swedish Black Vulture Records! That's a record that has been in production for 3 years or something like that, so it's very fun to at last get it out!

MD: After "The Rejects" we will record an EP, which I think we will name "An Unexpected Interference.

12. If you have videos where can we see them?

DT: Follow our social media and you'll be noticed when the new in making video will be out. It will be pretty soon..!

13. Everybody has Bandcamp , ReverbNation , Soundcloud , etc

Why do you think this is so important? Doesn't it seem like everyone is giving everything out for free?

DT: We don't use all that stuff though, but I guess it can be good to be where folks are, so to say. But you could go crazy if you should be everywhere! So if anyone is interested in us, I'm sure those well sharpened people will find our stuff where we are.

14. Best moment of your career so far?

MD: Playing with the other guys in Dark Legacy is always a good moment. Best moment...there´s a lot of them. Maybe the latest album.

15. Your message to the fans?

DT: We love you!
MD: Listen to our music, enjoy it and play it for your friends!

Bonus Question who do you bring back

Dime , Cliff , Dio , Lemmy , Randy

DT: Would love to experience Dio live once again. Why not ... bring 'em all back!

MD: Oh, holy shit what a difficult question! Well, Cliff or Dio?!? Maybe Dio because he definitely was one of the best singers in the world.
