Polynove Pole interview

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

Hail all metalheads! The band started in late 2004 as a gothic-oriented and female-fronted metal project. As we grew up, also some sympho and doom-death melodics were applied.
2005-2009 was the most acrive period going forward, performing on festivals and in local clubs of Ukraine, recording first demos and than studio albums. In 2010 band got split for some time, but today it is living and playing again, even better than before.
Regarding European famous bands, we performed on one stage with Lake Of Tears, Cemetary Of Scream. Also with various bands well-known mostly in Ukraine - Komu Vnyz, Inferno, PaganLand.
What about each of us personally - Marianna, our female vocalist, is a soloist of Lviv Philharmonic and Organ Music House, drummer's job is sound engineering on radio station, keyboardist also plays in various pop and rock bands, so they are like connected to music for entire life. Guitarist is a sculptor and painter, and bassist/vocalist is working in software company. Most of us are nearly 30 years old, just keyboardist is 24 ).

2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

It means “Wormwood Field” in Ukrainian. We have a famous proverb, which says – “To live a life is not to come across the field”. Some kind of philosophy. Once long ago I wrote a poem named like this, later it was used as lyrics for the very first song of a newly created metal band, and than even became the band's name. Wormwood grass is associated with pain and gloom, also it is used to make an absinth, so we decided it’s a good name for a gothic-oriented band.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there? Are there any local bands you could recommend?

Polynove Pole is located in Lviv, the most western city of Ukraine. What about other Ukrainian bands I could recommend, they are "Paganland", "Jinger", "Nocturnal Mortum", "Ignea", "Khors", "1914". Actually we have a huge number of talanted bands here in Ukraine, but I cannot describe each of them right now. What about heavy and extreme music scene - in general it is much better than it was when we just started. It depends of music styles - big festivals are gathering wide range of artists, so you can hear electronic, pop, hardcore and metal bands on one fest. These are “Zahidfest”, “Faine Misto”, “Respublica”. What about extreme metal music festivals, it is mostly played on local clubs or several specialized fests, like “Metal Heads Mission”, “Oskorei”, “Ragnard Reborn”, “Doom Over Kyiv”, “West Ukrainian Division”. Year by year heavy music turns to be something commonly listened than extreme and teenage-oriented only.

4. How would you describe your style?

In our early years our genre and our identity as a band inclined to "gothic metal", but now most listeners regard us to be closer to "melodic doom/death". It depends not only from how the music sounds like, but from lyrics thematics as well. In the last release it became heavier, but also more melodic than before. Mostly we agree with reviewers, let them decide what is it most like, why not?

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

For today (if not counting early demos) we have released 2 EP's and 2 LP albums. First studio EP, "Pure Souls", contained 4 songs, was released in early 2008. Next year we released a full length "On The Seven Winds". After that, in early 2010 a new EP named "Under The Cold Stone", also with 4 songs. And finally, "On The Edge Of The Abyss" LP in November 2017.
For the last time music turned to be heavier and faster because of some stuff changes in 2016. This year we signed a contract with Ukrainian label "Moon Records".

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

We already have most of the music for our next album, like drafts or some junks it needs to be finished and arranged. Then lyrics should be written. In general, we expect to finish all the work and record the album in 2019, but earlier or later - time will tell. It depends on our personal circumstances and on inspiration, of cource.
Right now we are making a new single. Drums are already recorded, guitars and bass just started. It's gonnna be a fast and brutal song. Planning to make a release this winter. Started making a Lyric Video for one of songs from last EP.

7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

First of all, we are looking for gigs in nearest countries, like Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, Czech Republic. In Ukraine we have enough live gigs, for example we performed in our capital Kyiv twice this year.

8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Playing, performing on live gigs and festivals, writing new songs. Our primary goal is to create new songs for the next release, and perform on local festivals. A new video clip filming is planned in October 2018. Along with that we are looking for a new label company to deal with for a considerable period of time. Creativity is never ending process. And how will it look like - time will tell.

9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

All our stuff - music, live videos and photos are presented on our internet resources (please find list of links below). And if you want disks or merch, you can order it on our official website or Facebook page.

10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Nice question. I would like people to listen, but not to slam. Being on stage it's not obvious - are people impressed or bored, if they just stand listening, but no beadbanges. But anyway I would like them to listen. I would like them to remember melodies coming out of concert. To remember lyrics. It's great to see people singing our old familiar songs before stage. I would like them to recognize themselves and their life experience in our songs.
Stay metal and listen to a good music only.  See you soon!
