GREYHAWK INTERVIEW
Answered by Greyhawk bassist : Darin Wall
1. Please tell us about the about the band and its members.
The band consists of Rev Taylor (Vocals), Jesse Berlin and Enrico Mariuzzo (Guitars), Darin Wall (Bass), Nate Butler (Drums). We are based out of Seattle, WA, although none of us are from here originally. We come from places like Italy, Canada, New Mexico and Eastern Washington State. Our journeys have brought us together here to wild the power of true metal!
2. Who does the majority of the writing? Is it a group thing or does someone handle the writing duties?
It’s very collaborative. Many times one person will have an idea, be it a riff, melody, vocal lines whatever the case may be. We will play it, talk about it and mull it over in discussion and come up with song ideas, concepts and loose structure. Then Jesse will take it all home and demo it at his house. After which we discuss again, edit and then play it live in the rehearsal room where all the final details get hashed out. So far so good with this process!
3. Where is the band based out of ? Where did you want to the band to end up? What was the dream city to have as your home base once you got out of your scene?
We’re based out of Seattle, WA. It’s a great place to play music and just a fantastic city overall apart from the shitty traffic. I think this is likely where we will stay, but as far as a dream city I guess the only thing we can wish for is that Europe was a bit closer, because that seems to be where a lot of our fans are located.
4. What is your genre? What bands do you use to explain to people what you sound like?
HEAVY. FUCKING. METAL. That’s it. We aren't trying to reinvent the wheel because frankly the wheel works just fine as it is. But we do put our own spin on it. When you listen to our music you definitely get the vibe of the glory days of the 1980s, but we put a lot of different stuff in there. There's some neoclassical elements, some operatic harmonized vocals. We are rooted in the 80s but are proudly not a ripoff band.
5. Can we buy anything from you Cd's shirts etc and where can we buy them?
Yes! We have our debut EP called RIDE OUT which will be released on October 18th 2018, and that will be available both in digital and CD format. We are looking into a vinyl release eventually but I wouldn't wait on that as it may be a while. We also have shirts based on the Ride Out artwork, and are looking to expand our merch selection soon. All can be purchased at our band camp which is greyhawkmetal.bandcamp.com
6. Do you have studio time lined up anything new coming soon?
Well we have just wrapped up our debut EP so nothing in the immediate future. However we are preparing some music for a follow up whether it’s another EP or a full length in 2019. And we also have some songs we love kicking around that didn't quite make the EP, but we will be recoding as singles and B-sides coming up too. So you will definitely hear more music from Greyhawk!
7. Have you ever been on tour? If so where and with who?
This band has yet to go on tour, as we only have one show! But myself I have been on tour with various past bands of mine and as a fill in with friends bands. Touring is the best and I can't wait to get this band on the road. We have dates planned for Canada and Oregon before 2018 is done.
8. What is your favorite band? Who are the bands who influenced you?
For me Black Sabbath are hands down my favorite band of all time. I believe Heaven and Hell is the finest slab of heavy metal music I have ever heard. But as a band our influences vary. We are greatly influenced by Dio, Yngwie Malmsteen, Manowar, Racer X, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Blind Guardian, as well as opera and neoclassical music.
9. Do you have a website? And do I have to verify that I am 18 to enter it?
We do not have an official website as of yet, but you can find us on facebook, twitter, band camp, Instagram and most of the major social media platforms. As far as i know there’s no age restrictions on any of those.
10. What about your music do you want people to remember? What is the quality you want to hit people when they hit play?
Fun! We want to make people smile. We want people to put our music on when they are throwing back pints of beer with their friends and family, and we want our tunes to make them feel good, the way all the great bands we love do for us.
11. Name a person who is integral to your band that nobody knows about , what person drives your band like they are part of the band? Who is the extra member ?
My dog Shiro. He’s at all the writing sessions we do and is never late (Don’t worry, we do not play at full volume), and he's more metal than most people I know.
12. Tell nerds like me tell us about your live rig and equipment.
I play a custom Spector bass through and Orange OB-1 amp. Jesse plays BC Rich and Fender guitars, Enrico plays Gibson and TTM guitars through Marshall amps, Nate plays Mapex drums and Rev plays his amazing voice.
13.What is your musical guilty pleasure that you are ashamed of?
None! Why be ashamed of any music you like? I’ve never sought metal scene points or credibility based on my musical taste. I like what I like and if you don't like that get bent!
14.If you could custom build a band who would be the members?
I’d make a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band with all the surviving members of Creed and call it CREEDance Clearwater Revival. I said “surviving members” because I have no idea if they're dead or not.
15.Message to the fans? What is it?
The power of heavy metal drew five strangers together to seek the source of true musical might. From the sacred well of rock n’ roll they drew the Sword of Shred and became GREYHAWK — bound forever to Ride Out across the cosmos in the name of sonic justice!
