1.Thanks for your time. Tell us about your band and what you do for your band.
The Darkest Hearts was formed by Luke and I about 5 years ago after my divorce and Luke returning from his tour as a hired gun in LA. We both enjoyed the others writing skills and style so we just decided it was time. The resulting combination was our wanting to finish some music that we had both been sitting on as well as release something we both had finished. Our EP was the result of our efforts and was actually done by just Luke and myself (mostly Luke). Now we are continually growing and getting more and more traction as well as garnering some much wanted attention.
2.When did you decide you wanted to be in a band?
Like I said it was after my divorce and Luke’s trip to lice in LA as a hired gun.
3. What is different about being a musician than you imagined?
The amount of work associated with being a musician now is insane. It is impossible now to make a dent in the world around you without an army of different teams doing something all the time. The attention span of listeners and fans alike has gone down so we have to increase efforts 10x to stay on their minds long enough to make a lasting impression.
4.What gear do you use and why?
As of right now as a band we are very fond of a few different gear companies. I am very fond of Jackson/Charvel Guitars and Sure microphones but I recently got a Lewitt MTP 550 DM from Artist Relations here in Nashville and I honestly like it better than the SM58B I was using. As for the boys... we are gonna have to do a rig rundown to show all of the equipment they prefer but for the most part Luke is a Mesa and PRS guy and Daniel is a Gibson and Mesa man. Daniel actually has a tattoo of a Gibson headstock on his leg lol.
5. What music do you listen to that would surprise people?
Oh man. I think we all have a little bit of something in ya that would surprise people but I listen to almost everything. From opera to Project Pat and Slipknot to Cab Calloway. We all just really like music as a whole.
6. How do we find your music and merch to buy?
The best way to find our music and merchants is to come to a show. But if that isn’t an option you can check out our website at www.thedarkesthearts.eu and find the merch there. As for the music you can find us on all digital music platforms or you can order a hard copy from the website.
7. How did you get a record deal? Or do you want a record deal or are you DIY?
We struggle with this question a lot and we aren’t exactly sure what the answer is as of yet. We do have our own label but I don’t think we are opposed to having another label backing us as well or if the deal was sweet enough buying us out.
8. What bands do people compare your music to?
Right now we are getting a lot of Blackstone Cherry, Shamans Harvest, and bands that run in that genre.
9. Are you pro Spotify / streaming services ? Or do you think it hurts sales?
We don’t think Spotify is the best way to keep music alive but it is how things go. Like we said before people don’t want entire albums anymore. They want single after single after single and they don’t want to pay for it. So 10$ a month is a steal for them to have all the music they want and never have to purchase a single song.
10. What’s the ultimate goal for the band?
10. The ultimate goal for the band is not world domination as it might be with a lot of others. We really just want to make music our lives and not have to work day jobs. If we can support ourself and help some people through our music we will all be happy with what we have contributed to the world.
11. Will we see you tour?
We are currently taking a short break from furiously booking and trying to work out a new LP. We are planning on getting out there and doing a tour as soon as we can though.
12. Who would you love to tour with?
There are to many bands to mention. Some because we heard or know they are just good people and others because buckets lists exist.
13.What is your favorite song of yours and why?
14. Why should people take the time to listen to your band over the thousands of other bands?
Because why stop listening to new music? We have great production quality and we put on one hell of a show. The songs speak for themselves and we just like meeting people. We want you to come and hang out with us and tell us about who you are and what you liked and didn’t like. We want to grow and that only happens from listening.
15.What are your favorite music websites labels podcast etc?
15. I need to give a quick shout out to a couple DJs that have been super supportive for us Namely Candy Gunn of The Candy Gunn Radio Show and Samantha Knight from Z97.5 and her show Rock Around The Region. We have become friends with these beautiful people and we hope you give them as much of a chance as you give us. Wes you have been really helpful and are just a good dude so despite the fact that I don’t listen to many podcasts I do listen to yours. (Thank you so much! Im honored to be a good dude its a great compliment .Wes )
16. Is imagery important to you? Do you judge albums by the cover?
16. Imagery is super important. I don’t want to go buy a black metal album that looks like a BeyoncĂ© record or a JZ song that looks like a Garth Brooks cover. Before we can hear anything we see things that either bring us in or push us away. Branding is everything now and that is why we take so much time to make sure we have a signature look and sound.
17.If you could choose a cover song your band mates would hate what would it be?
17. Oh I would need some vocal coaching to do it but I would want to do “Chandelier” by Sia. That song is amazing.
18.Is the record or live show more important?
18. I think the question is which is more important to the person hearing or seeing it. They both have a role to play and it isn’t always as simple as one outweighs the other.
19. Name 3 people dead or alive you would want to play your music for.
19. My grandparents, they raised me for a good chunk of my childhood and they didn’t live long enough to make it to a show. They did get to hear a single song I wrote years ago but that is all they ever got on this plane. And the third would be Dimebag Darrell. He was one of the most influential people for my musical upbringing and I think he would dig it.
20. Lemmy Ozzy Dio and Rob Halford in a cage match who wins?
20. Lemme. He just looks like he could brawl it out like a champ. No offense to the others but Ozzy Dio and Rob are all smaller and not quite as intimidating.
