Living Machines Interview

1. Please tell us about the history of your band and its members.

We are progressive metal outfit that tells a science fiction epic through music and a comic book series named Gemini: A Tale of Future Earth, that I (Quinn McGraw) write. The band was formed shortly after our original vocalist Robert Gardner and I started writing the first EP I: After Onyx. After having a few songs complete, we brought in guitarists Robin Fussell, Mason Dry and drummer Adam Alfano. In 2017 we released our first single White Flame, and a supporting music video a few months later. By the end of that year we had parted ways with Robert and Adam. I took over drums, and we brought Ryan Card on as our new frontman. In January 2018 we released our debut I: After Onyx, and we are already in the process of recording our new EP. The new EP will also have our new vocalist performing on it.

 2. What’s the origin of the band’s name?

Living Machines are the hybrid animal slaves that serve the military government in the Gemini story universe.

3. Where is the band based out of and what is your music scene like there?

Are there any local bands you could recommend? We are from Kelowna, B.C., Canada. The music scene locally is actually on the rise again for heavier genres. There was a bit of a dip after the EDM scene really blew up here, but tons of local bands are active again! Some Kelowna bands to check out would be Apollyon and Kitsune.

 4. How would you describe your style?

If I had to try and boil it down to a pair of genres, I’d say Metalcore (Architects and Shields UK), and Melodic Progressive Metal/Djent (Periphery and Tesseract).

5. What have you released so far and what can someone expect from your works?

So far we’ve released a debut EP (I: After Onyx) which is the first story arc album for Gemini. We’ve also digitally released I: After Onyx (Declassified Booster Pack) which has a stripped down version of The Valkyrie (The Valkyrie V2) with our new vocalist Ryan, and a dubstep remix of the song Living Machines by EDM producer SixxSpeed. The first EP is definitely is more on the Metalcore side, but also has voice acted skits, symphonic elements, and cinematic soundscapes that all aid in telling the story we’ve set out to portray musically.

6. Do you have any new music in the works?

We’re already finished writing our new EP, and we are half way through tracking it! Jordan Chase from Secret and Whisper and Shreddy Kreuger will be producing the EP. The new music is a lot darker, and is truer to the prog metal/djent realm. It will be the first of two EPs that tell the next story arc. The second of the two will be much more melodic and quite a contrast from first one, which is much darker and sinister.

 7. How about playing shows and touring, have anything planned out?

We have a show coming up in July with No Liars, Youth Fountain and The Carbons. Asides that, we’re currently sorting out a western Canada tour and will be hitting British Columbia and Alberta in October with some wicked bands that will be announced soon.

 8. What plans do you have for the future as a band?

Presently, I’m waiting to hear back from publishers for the submission letters I’ve sent out for our comic book. Knowing whether or not we have a publishing deal or going independent will dictate how soon the first comic book issue will be hitting the shelves. That’s the primary focus asides writing our new music, as of late. Beyond that, we’re hoping to have both of these EPs out by 2019 (the first one will be released this year) and we will be buckling down after that to write our first full length!

 9. Where can we listen to your band and where can we buy your stuff?

We are on Spotify, iTunes, Google Music, YouTube and virtually all major digital retailers and platforms. Additionally, people can buy some merch and CDs (while supplies last) from our online store. 10. What is it you’d like a listener to remember the most when hearing your music for the first time?

Our music is intended to be listened to as an entire story, not just individual songs. That’s not to say that our songs by themselves won’t stand up on their own two feet, but it’s worth mentioning that the concept is best delivered by listening to an entire record from start to finish :)
