KAOTEON mastermind Anthony Kaoteon INTERVIEW is UPLIFTING!

Forged in a cauldron of conflict, born of a fiercely independent spirit that refused to be broken and constrained by oppressive regimes and religious and political dogma, Beyond Pain And Pleasure: A Desert Experiment is the story of one man’s unending defiance. Death Tribe is a raised fist in the face of corruption and domination.
Anthony Kaoteon, now a resident of The Netherlands, was born in Beirut and it was in that maelstrom of warfare and radical ideologies that the songs for Death Tribe were conceived. Refusing to accept the life that fate had decreed for him, Anthony fled Lebanon for Dubai where he found himself connecting with other rebels who had escaped the shadows of oppression. These kindred spirits contributed an array of visceral vocal performances to Beyond Pain And Pleasure..., bringing the album to raging life. Musically speaking, Anthony was able to complement his own remarkable skills with the experience and dexterity of drummer Mattias Landes (Dark Fortress) and bassist Linus Klausenitzer (Obscura) – a formidable team indeed! Speaking of his time working with Death Tribe Mattias Landes offered this evaluation,

“I think we succeeded in creating something really cool... All I can say is: expect the unexpected!"

Linus Klausenitzer has also expressed his pleasure at being invited to perform on Beyond Pain And Pleasure...

“This album is very diverse and full of energy. The Death Metal scene is still growing but I can see that a lot of bands forget about the intensity of this music. This album makes you feel like being at a metal concert! I am very happy that Anthony invited me to play on this album!”

Already known for his work with Kaoteon, Death Tribe is Anthony’s most powerful musical statement to date. So much more than a collection of songs, Beyond Pain And Pleasure: A Desert Experiment is a staggering achievement against all the odds, the sonic distillation of absolute defiance. This epitomises everything that metal was ever meant to be. Available from February 22nd 2019, Beyond Pain And Pleasure: A Desert Experiment draws on sounds from a myriad of different metal territories...heavy metal, death metal, black metal, thrash metal... they all contribute to Death Tribe’s DNA, each strand entwining with the next  to form this vibrant, vital, cohesive beast of an album.

"I dedicate this album to those who keep chasing their dreams, to every person that was born with a tag on his forehead and defied the world to make his own statement heard - I will die soon but the music stays to remind those who listen of a man who didn't obey"  – Anthony Kaoteon

1.What is the name of your band and how did you come up with it?
What is your name and what do you do for the band?

Death Tribe is a celebration of life's ultimate destination - Death. By the time we finish this interview,
we would have already consumed a portion of our time that we will never gain back.
Hence the band name, Death Tribe, to remind us to live to the fullest every second.
I am known as Anthony Kaoteon as I have been the music composer for the band KAOTEON for the past 21 years.

2.Tell us where you are based and describe the scene. How do you think where you are located influences your sound.

I have been in The Netherlands since 2nd of October 2018. I was born and raised in war torn, socially tormented and politically corrupted Beirut
and was in Dubai for the past 6 years. It was a very rough ride to get here but I will leave that story for another time.
As for the Netherlands, it will surely have impact on the music I will release in 2020 for both Kaoteon and Death Tribe.

3.Who influences your sound that would surprise people?

I was raised in bombshelters, witnessed over ten wars from the front row, I have been exposed to different types of racism, sexism & corruption.
I was in jail for playing metal music and here I am standing tall and still doing what I enjoy to exercise my right of free speech and choice and help
the world see the wrong in the world to make it a better place tomorrow.

4.Are you endorsed by musical companies , if so who , and if not who would you like to be endorsed by?

No, I am not. My favorite guitars are Ibanez & Aristides, I enjoy EHV by Fender, Mesa Boogie and Blackstar for Amps, AKG for Microphones while
Seymour Duncan have been my favorite passive pickups and Fishman for Digital! Beind endorsed was never a thing I seeked but it sure as hell helps
a musician these days!

5.When you started what was your ultimate goal? And how close to the goal are you now?

I started playing metal music in 1998 and so I created KAOTEON (Chaotic Aeon) at the time to have fun and diss the social norms that were so restraining.
It opened my mind, made me want to learn more about philosophy, theology, cultures and history. it helped me shape my idiosyncracy and become the best
version of myself. Music is the best language I have learned to date and I already speak three languages and learning the fourth!

6.In today's digital environment it takes creative strategy to keep things moving. What creative ideas do you have to keep your band relevant over time?

Be truthful, find a gap and address it, stay true to your sound and integrity and the world will notice your uniqueness. It takes time but they do.

7.We've all seen a terrible live band that is awesome on CD. Is that cool with you or do you lose respect for bands that cannot pull it off live?

I have respect to all musicians who have the discipline to work hard to put great music outthere and do their best to develop their skills in the studio
or live. Respect is earned through hard work and dedication. All else is subjective.

8.Tell us your “core” are you Metal , Rock , Punk , Pop etc because people just have to categorize these days you know?

I enjoy good music. I do not identify as anything. I enjoy my Satyricon album as much as my Rammstein, David Bowie and Tom Waits for that matter. Check out
Rabih Abou Khalil for some Oriental Jazz music that you might enjoy too!

9.This is a tough question but a very real reality, Is your band actually talented or just popular?

Many bands make it with a cliche or publicity stunts etc. Would you accept fame even if it was just because of being the “ in” thing or is it actually important to you that you gain favor with talent?

A lot of bands fall under the entertainment bracket, other under classics and legendary. Both are necessary for different reasons and platforms.
Talent overcomes popular but that doesn't mean it doesn't take talent to be popular. The mix of both is what makes a band go from a one hit wonder
to legendary status.

10.Tell us what to expect from you live. Nothing is more boring than watching bands stare at the floor and bob their heads to music nobody but the band knows. What can your band offer in a live setting that people will remember?

If you have been to one of our KAOTEON shows. you will realise that we are driven by a passion and anger like no other. it is like a bomb exploded and the crowd is moving with it to contain it.
As for Death Tribe and I really hope you did some research. We never played live as this is the first release :-)

11. What releases have you put out , When will we see something new?

Beyond Pain and Pleasure: My Desert Experiment is the first album I am putting out with Death Tribe.

12. If you have videos where can we see them?
On DEATH TRIBE's official youtube channel.

13.Everybody has Bandcamp , ReverbNation , Soundcloud , etc
Why do you think this is so important? Doesn't it seem like everyone is giving everything out for free?

We sell our albums digitally on bandcamp and collect streaming rights from all streaming platforms. This is what makes bands some pocket money these days.

14.Best moment of your career so far?

Winning the Global Metal Award at The Golden Gods Award from Metal Hammer UK in 2018 with KAOTEON.

15.Your message to the fans?

Your support is the one factor that keeps us going. Share and support your favorite bands as you are the source of their income.

Bonus Question who do you bring back
Dime , Cliff , Dio , Lemmy , Randy

None, Death is real and they lived a great life.
