THE AXEMEN INTERVIEW : Ville Viren / Evil Drive

1.Tell us your name and the band you play for

Ville Viren and I play at melodic metal band called Evil Drive from Finland.

2.Who made you want to pick up the guitar

It was around 1984 when I go to school and everybody is listening metal music there at that point. Then I heard WASP The Last Command at my friends home and it was coolest thing I ever heard before. Then I started to listen to all bands at that time and play with shovel guitar in my parents living room, then my father bought my first real guitar, Brewis Les Paul.

3.Are you self taught or did you take lessons?

I took lessons when I was younger, about 1990 I heard Metallica the first time and hit my head really hard. Then I bought Metallica’s Master Of Puppets tablature book and practiced the full album. There I learned, that it suits best to my style, down picking and all.

4. Can you read music, Can you read tab?

I don’t understand anything about notes, but of course I can read at tabulatures.

5.Do you feel like you have your own sound / tone ?

Yes I think that people can hear and know my sound, the sound is come from hands. If I need to choose one sound, I sound like a mix of Jeff Hanneman and Dave Murray.

6.Tell us about your guitar ( brand ,model . year , color )

I have many guitars. I’m endorsed with Jackson USA guitars. Mostly I use Jackson RR style. I just ordered Warrior, it was my long-time dream. My guitars are custom paint or mirror top, and I like Cross inlays like Chris Holmes had in the 80's. I really like how much Jackson fits in my hands and they look really metal. I think if you play Les Paul or some Fenders, they just don’t fit into our music sound-wise.

7.What about pickups? Passive or active ? Tell us about them

I use EMG 81. But I don’t see so much differences with pickups, your hands and playing style make most of the sound. I like EMG because it’s a pure Metal pickup and all my heroes use them.

8.Lets get into amplification, Same drill brand , model , speakers etc

I’m endorsed with EVH and I use it because its sounds totally the best I’ve ever heard. It’s heavy, it’s really clear and has a big sound and really good with solos. Of course, because Eddie Van Halen created it. I use Marshall JCM-800 as a cabinet.

9.Do you have a pedal board? Tell us about that badboy

I have just a little Lead Boost and Delay. I hate to play with these boards, I just need to put plug in and play, there is my sound.

10..Now tell us your Dream Rig in detail…..

I have my dream Rig already. Jackson/EHV/Marshall JCM-800, that’s it. Simple and best.

11.What guitarist can you not stand?

Everybody has their own style. I can listen to all but I listen to whom I like.

12. Is tone more important or is technique?

Both are as important than the other.

13. Name your top 5 guitarist

-  James Hetfield

- Jeff Hannemann

- Dave Murray

- Bruce Kulick

- JP Pusa

14.Who is the most overrated guitarist

Underrated is more easy to tell, but overrated, maybe somebody who can play 1000 notes per second and can’t write any songs.

15.Who would you like a one hour private sit down lessons with anyone dead or alive?

I’d do it with one of my hero Chris Holmes, then he would say I play better than he (laughs).

If had to choose someone to teach me how to write songs, I would choose old school James Hetfield.
