THE AXEMEN SEIES : Greg Wenk / Veritas!

1.Tell us your name and the band you play for

Greg Wenk I'm the guitarist for Veritas!

2.Who made you want to pick up the guitar

After hearing hearing KISS Alive, I decided I wanted to play guitar.

3.Are you self taught or did you take lessons?

I took lessons in the beginning to learn all the basics in addition to learning to play my favorites by ear.

4. Can you read music, Can you read tab?

I can read music and tab but haven't done it for many years. I write and learn all music by ear. Tab never seemed to be 100% correct when I was using it early on and even though I've had years of music theory, it seems kind of restricting. Some things sound great but are supposed to fit or work technically.

.

5.Do you feel like you have your own sound / tone ?

I would like to think so but doesn't everyone. I just try to get the tone I hear in my head and get it to come through whatever amps I'm using.

6.Tell us about your guitar ( brand ,model . year , color )

I have several. My main guitar that i use for writing and recording is an original Ibanez rg550 with a DiMarzio x2n pickup in the bridge. It was originally some neon red color from the 80's but was repainted a royal blue. I use that when I play live and also a Jackson Soloist in white that is stock currently. I also own a Hamer Scarab(red/balck tiger stripe), BCRich Ironbird(black/orange crackle finish)

7.What about pickups? Passive or active ? Tell us about them

Passive for me. I've tried active in the past but got tired of changing batteries. DiMarzio x2n has been a favorite for many years. I just like the tone I get with them very balanced. Also like the Seymore Duncan Screamon Demon.

8.Lets get into amplification, Same drill brand , model , speakers etc

I use different amplifiers depending on what sound I'm trying to get. For recording I used the Engl 530 preamp. My current favorite combination for live is the Marshall 100dsl through a Marshall 1960a cabinet with the stock speakers. I use the clean channel and get the overdriven sound from a Blackstar tube distortion pedal. Also have used Carvin, Blackstar, Jet City

9.Do you have a pedal board? Tell us about that badboy

No pedal board. I try to keep the effects to a minimum

10..Now tell us your Dream Rig in detail…..

I really like the tones I get from Engl amps. It seems very easy to get tones dialed in quickly. I'm not sure what the perfect Engl amp would be since they aren't readily available where I live. Guitar would have to be Ibanez RG550 fitted with the X2n pickups.

11.What guitarist can you not stand?

There aren't any I openly dislike, I just don't listen to them.  Although Kurt Cobain's guitar always seemed to be out of tune. Kind of annoying

I12. Is tone more important or is technique?

I think a balance is best. Doesn't matter how good you are or how good the songs if it's unlistenable and could have the best mix and recording available but if the songs aren't good, who's going to listen?

13. Name your top 5 guitarist

This is going to be tough. In no order, George Lynch, Yngwie Malmsteen, Criss Oliva, Paul Gilbert, Alex Skolnick. All of them blew me away the first ime I heard them

14.Who is the most overrated guitarist

Can't think of anyone in particular

15.Who would you like a one hour private sit down lessons with anyone dead or alive?

Criss Oliva. He had amazing tone, great licks and phrasing. He also seemed like a great guy. Only had a chance to see Savatage once but first time I head Hall of the Mountain King I was hooked.
